whats the easiest way to do that? I have all the all the files on a the desktop and copies on a hard drive, but the project is referencing the files on the desktop. I want to transfer the project to my laptop and take it on the road with me. is there a quick way to do that?

Just copy the VEG file to the external drive. When you connect the external drive to the other machine and open the VEG file, it will say it can't find the files and ask where they are. Point it to the new folder. If they're all in that same folder, it will ask if you want it to automatically find them all in that folder.
