Do you guys do custom white balance or change it in post?

I ask because one of my Canon XH-A1 for some reason will not let me change the White Balance and I have an E session tomorrow, and wedding next weekend.

If this indeed is a Canon Problem not user error, would you send in for repair (not warranty) or just deal with it in post?

I have the XLH1, and you should always custom set WB. Fixing it properly in post is pretty brutal in most cases. Check in with the XH-A1 forum, but you should be able to custom WB - because even my HV20 has custom WB. You can't do it if your in full auto mode though. If your controls are like the H1, then turn the main dial to AV, or TV, and the WB dial to 1 or 2... and fill the viewfinder with white and hold the button till the WB is set. The nice thing about weddings is that there's usually lots of white around.

The XLH1 has 2 custom presets which you can use, and also features 1 setting that allows you to dial in WB using a Kelvin temperature meter. I don't know if the A1 has this, but it is a great feature when you are dealing with mixed light sources (tungsten & daylight). In the few instances where I've used the Auto WB, I've found it pretty good.

What you DONT want to do is have it set for daylight when shooting in tungsten or vice versa. In either case, your image will be awfully blue or awfully orange.

If you get stuck and can't figure it out, you should get a reasonable result using the auto WB setting.
