I am still using Premiere 6.5. Yes, I know CS4 is out, but I like 6.5, it works well and fast on my computer (using a 10 month old Dell dual core...it will probably run a CS# premiere but don't need to try yet).

I am about to start a video project and trying to decide what format to shoot.

Will Premiere 6.5 import video shot in 720p, out of the box? Or do I need any special codec or plug in?

Will the program be stable editing it?

Will the program be super slow editing it?

Yes, I saw that, But I am NOT shooting in HDV. The footage will be from a HVX200 in non HDV 720p.

Try taking the 720p material if it is in a compatible format and convert it to .dv using mpeg streamclip. You will have to render it but it will edit in SD on the Premiere 6.5 timeline. of course you will have to set the 6.5 presets to 16x9 format.

Oops! just saw that you are not shooting in a HDV format. Streamclip will not work for this but it is free so give it a try. It is a useful utility.

720p *is* HD. According to the cam's specs:

"Using the DVCPRO HD codec recording system, the AG-HVX200A records HD video with outstanding image and audio quality onto a P2 card in file format. This codec, thanks to a low compression ratio at a video bit rate of 100 Mbps (1080/59.94i, 720/59.94p) ..."

which is even larger and harder to handle than HDV. So my original answer, I think, holds. I suppose I should have edited it to read that to my knowledge, 1.5.1 was the first version to do any form of HD. But if you have 6.5, why not just open it and see what presets it offers? 1.5.1 shows no HD other than standard HDV at all -- for 720 it is 720p30 only.
