Check back here on January 7th, 2009 for all the juicy details revealed at the FCPUG Supermeet. I will have my hands-on review posted here at dvinfo.net a day later.
Tim Dashwood January 5th, 2009, 10:04 AM I don't make it a habit to bump threads but I'm very surprised that no one is the slightest bit curious what this new "video acquisition product" is.
We'll have all the details posted here after the FCP Supermeet and I will have a hands-on preview posted on Friday Jan 9th.
Mike Marriage January 5th, 2009, 10:13 AM I think the details were too vague but could be VERY interesting... Look forward to hearing about it!
Shaun Roemich January 5th, 2009, 10:38 AM Oh, I'm curious all right... I have a short list of things I HOPE this announcement is all about.
Justin Ferar January 5th, 2009, 01:10 PM I've been intensely curious and will be there on Wednesday.
I just hope it's something that will benefit users other than HD250's.
Alex Humphrey January 5th, 2009, 04:03 PM It was making me think to take a day off from work and go and rub shoulders and ask questions! But I don't think I can get out of it
Steve Oakley January 5th, 2009, 04:32 PM if it doesn't work on a HD100 like the announced SxS card recorder only works on 200 series cameras... I don't care.
I will say I'm just about done with tape though. if its an affordable drive pak, I'm game if it will work on my camera.
David Knaggs January 5th, 2009, 06:28 PM My sentiments are exactly the same as Steve's. Will it work with the 100/110 and will it be affordable? I'd love to go tapeless though.
Chuck Pullen January 5th, 2009, 08:47 PM I figured it out, you will soon be able to plug your JVC into the new "i-pod" and use it as hard disk recorder. Then the new "i-phone" will have an FCP app that you can use cut in the field and post it online... What will Apple think of next...
David Knaggs January 5th, 2009, 10:03 PM Hey Chuck, an app for my iPhone that would wrap the incoming .m2t stream into a QuickTime file would be heaven! I would pay $150 for that app. (Maybe a job for Mike Woodworth!) It would just need a special cable with a 6 pin FW on one end for the camera and the other end plugs into the bottom of the iPhone.
I'm also interested in reading Tim's preview article on Friday about the JVC acquisition product. I'm always interested in anything Tim has to say.
But the idea of an iPhone app for the 100/110 crowd reminds me a bit of the alternatives for the SXS cards on the PMW EX-1/3 forum (such as the Kensington adapter and MxR adapter). SXS cards are a terrific and reliable product, but these SXS alternatives are something like 1/10th the cost and have proven wildly popular with DV Info members.
The Firestore DR-HD100 looks like a great product but is priced at A$3,328 in my neck of the woods. Plus another A$215 for the mount brings the total to A$3543. For comparison, I noticed that B&H are selling the entire camera, GY-HD110, for US$3,480 or A$4,891. So the DR-HD100 is up to 72% of the cost of a brand-new camera. That's why I draw the parallel with the PMW-EX1's SXS cards.
If the new JVC announcement only concerns the 200/250 series, then an iPhone app as described above could prove similarly popular (such as the SXS alternatives) for the 100/110 owners on this board. Purely my opinion.
Alex Humphrey January 5th, 2009, 11:55 PM What I'm hoping for is a solid state device taking the uncompressed video and audio outputs from any of the ProHD line and recording them in a variety of Apple/Sony codecs such as XDCAM HD, and XDCAM EX, HOWEVER, I REALLY REALLY REALLY hope it's Apple's PRO RES 422!
Hmmm I would be just as happy to have it have a firewire port on the back so the ProRes 422 from the uncompressed live outputs to the firewire drive while bypassing the HDV encoder. If such a device came out at a reasonable price, I would buy the device on weds afternoon and order a 13x lens and stick with JVC for the next 5 years.
Justin Ferar January 6th, 2009, 02:19 AM In bypassing HDV compression (which is what I hope this announcement is) I just don't see how they can do much for the non SDI crowd without retooling the cameras we already have. The only thing I can think of is a global board swap/upgrade path, which would pretty awesome. I'd be willing to throw down some ducats for that!
Alex Pitstra January 6th, 2009, 04:26 AM I definitely hope they introduce something that records in ProRes 422 to SxS, straight from the camera. Either via Firewire (like the AJA IoHD), which is always better -faster- then converting HDV to ProRes 422 afterwards) or via component-in/HD-SDI. This device would be a killer.
Or would they introduce a totally new camcorder with native ProRes 422 support...?
Liam Hall January 6th, 2009, 09:11 AM What do they mean by video acquisition product? Isn't that a camera??
Could this announcement be the solid state recording, super high-definition, multi format, multi frame rate, make you rich thingy-me-jig we've all been waiting for?
Richard Alvarez January 6th, 2009, 09:38 AM Not likely, but if we're in the realm of wish lists, I'd prefer AVID DNxHD - its a better codec than ProRes. (Let the flames begin.) ;)
EDIT: Wait, I just checked, and it seems JVC HAS a license to use DNxHD... interesting. They could offer BOTH ProRes, and DNxHD.
Alex Pitstra January 6th, 2009, 10:29 AM If this is a wish list for new devices... What would be really great is Matrox/AJA IoHD/DR-HD100 hybrid-product...
I mean a small, lean and mean, native ProRes 422 (and other codecs) recorder with component in, HDMI-out, HD-SDI in AND out, on-board battery + D-TAP cable, firewire and an ejectable ExpressCard for solid state storage.
Of course, the ejectable card can be inserted into the ExpressCard slot of a laptop, or the device itself can be hooked up to a computer via FireWire.
But, an additional cool feature would be this...
The ExpressCard can also act as a gateway to the IO-interfaces of the portable recorder-unit, like the Matrox MXO2! To enable this, the device comes with an additional 3 GB/s cable to connect the ExpressCard (which is also the Solid State harddisk) to the recorder-unit, enabling your system to output, via a 3 Gb/s connection, full res HD on a HDTV or professional monitor for critical color grading. It would also enable you to capture live trough one of the HD inputs of the device, maybe even uncompressed.
In addition to this, in camera/recording mode, the device enables to loop trough the input to an HDMI or HD-SDI output, so you still have a full res HD Preview in the field, using affordable HDMI TV's or professional HD-SDI monitors, while capturing the camera output to the unit.
All in one device...
Liam Hall January 6th, 2009, 10:32 AM Not likely, but if we're in the realm of wish lists, I'd prefer AVID DNxHD - its a better codec than ProRes. (Let the flames begin.) ;)

What's Avid got to do with it??? At least, what's it got to do with tomorrow's announcement?
The press release states "the introduction of the world's first video acquisition product developed for Final Cut post production".
BTW have you done a side by side of ProRes and DNxHD? I'd be interested to know your findings.
Liam.
Steve Oakley January 7th, 2009, 12:56 AM ok.macworld has came... and ????? nothing on pro.jvc.com ? so whats the word ?
Michael Galvan January 7th, 2009, 08:39 AM It's supposed to be revealed tonight.
My hopes are a camcorder mountable HD-SDI to ProRes recorder, which gets offloaded onto SxS cards or internal drive.
Would be great for my Canon XL H1S, especially since I shoot alot tethered to the AJA IO HD.
Shaun Roemich January 7th, 2009, 09:54 AM My hopes are a camcorder mountable HD-SDI to ProRes recorder, which gets offloaded onto SxS cards or internal drive.
With optional component inputs and I'm sold.
Steve Oakley January 7th, 2009, 02:20 PM I don't care about prores simply because its not cross platform. yes know PC's can now read ProRes, but they can't write it.
using a higher data rate of Mpeg2 like 35 or 50mbits though would be great. putting in enough CPU power to encode HD to ProRes will be expensive both in price and power. be careful what you wish for.
just gimme a $99 FW to iPod cable and let the iPod work as a DDR :)
Daniel Weber January 7th, 2009, 10:26 PM So any news from the Meet? Does anyone have a Blackberry or iPhone (gotta be a couple hundred of those there) that can spill the beans on the new JVC announcement?
Daniel Weber
Keith Moreau January 7th, 2009, 10:59 PM I'm here at the supermeet. It's a new HD camcorder that records .mov xdcam files to sdhc cards -potentially awesome FCP workflow. Under $4K. No demo footage shown. Should be info on pro.jvc.com tomorrow. It's something personally I could potentially use but who knows what the image quality is like, they didn't have demo footage which is suspect to me. It's a very small cam so small sensors and therefore probably not great in low light or will have inherently high dof.
Daniel Weber January 7th, 2009, 11:05 PM Thanks!! That's what I thought it was going to be. I saw a video of this camera that was shot at IBC, but no one was talking about the format that was going to be recorded on the SDHD cards. All the speculation was AVCHD, but they kept saying Pro camera and to me AVCHD is not a pro format.
I think that the chips will be 1/3". This is a great B roll camera and at a price of $4000 will compete well with the Panasonic camera that sells for about the same price.
Pretty cool when you consider that the SDHC chips are so cost efficient when compared to shooting with the SxS cards that I use on my EX1.
Did they give a shipping date?
Thanks for the update,
Daniel Weber
Keith Moreau January 8th, 2009, 12:19 AM They said April. Re EX1 and SDHC, we can now record on that with SDHC and Expersscard adapter -it works great with the EX1.

Thanks for the update on the shipping date (projected).
I am aware of the SDHC option for the EX1. I guess that I am worried about the data rates though. I don't want to give up the option to overcrank. I will buy some and test it out though. I don't want to take this discussion any further here since it is the wrong forum.
Nice move on JVC's part with this camera and the FCP workflow. Did they say if it would do the 35 mb XDCAM or only 25 mb? 35mb would be great in such a small package. Kind of worried about the lens though.

Tim Dashwood January 8th, 2009, 01:05 AM I started a new thread (http://www.dvinfo.net/conf/jvc-pro-hd-acquisition-systems/141123-specs-new-gy-hm100-prohd-camcorder.html) with all the specs I have so far. Most of the questions posed above are answered there.
Yes 35mbps. 1/4" CCD.
Locking this thread. Please post comments based on specs in the new thread.
