View Full Version : The DVC/UWOL CHARITY CHALLENGE
Lorinda Norton December 9th, 2008, 12:02 PM You read it right, folks: The DV Challenge and The Under Water Over Land Challenge are teaming up for a holidays shootout!
It’s not really a competition between the two. It is a way for people in both contests to participate in one common-theme challenge while gathering as large a donation as we can for one worthy charity. That means we will vote on films from both forums’ submissions for ONE winner. The winner gets to choose which charity receives the donation. Those who submit a film as well as those who donate will judge the films. Guidelines for judging will be discussed later in the contest.
Dylan Couper will post donation info (how you can donate) on a separate thread in each forum. He’ll also keep the totals updated as the donations pour in. Remember, you don’t have to sign up for the challenge to donate, nor do you have to donate to sign up. If you can do both, that’s great!
Sign up begins right now and will remain open throughout the contest. The theme (hang onto your hats) will be announced this THURSDAY, DEC. 11. Films must be submitted by midnight, THURSDAY, JAN. 1, 2009. You have until next year to finish this one! ;)
Maximum film length is five minutes, with an extra 15-20 seconds or so allowed for credits. All other rules from the forum where you sign up apply to your film. (Choose one forum, you smart guys who are used to signing up for both!)
Time to get this show on the road. Sign up here!

Ok, so I lied! I cancelled December, but now we’re back in the game!
Only this time, with a twist…

A UWOL note: before you ask, yes you can apply up to 3 minutes worth of footage from the charity round to your potential long-form entry. So for those of you who wanted to get shooting right away, this will be a great opportunity to fire up your batteries and get out there.
Also, remember: your sign-up number on this thread is your upload number - we will stick to that convention, if you plan to upload to our website.
Chris Barcellos December 9th, 2008, 12:12 PM I'm in....
Kris Holodak December 9th, 2008, 01:42 PM So we chose one forum to sign up in but it doesn't really matter which one we pick, right? Same theme and all, so it won't matter that I've signed up here if my film ends up being a bit on the outdoorsy side?
Sorry, I'm just over thinking it. Sign me up!!
Smile,
Kris
Lorinda Norton December 9th, 2008, 01:58 PM That's right, Kris. Same theme that you may interpret any way you like. :)
Sorry that the explanation wasn't the greatest, folks. Feel free to ask as many questions as you want. We'll work it out as we go and hopefully have a great time in the process!
Kevin Railsback December 9th, 2008, 02:25 PM Hi DVC People!
I usually don't find myself over in these parts but just wanted to say "Hey" and I'll see if I can't get something put together over on the UWOL side.
I have no problems being out in the open filming a grizzly bear but have an actor say "how do you want to block this?" and I get chills all down my spine. :)
Kevin Railsback December 9th, 2008, 02:26 PM Well, if I can get out of my driveway, I'll see if I can't put something together for this one.
Probably just another pretty picture film but hey, I like that stuff. :)
Course, it's not looking too pretty around these parts right now.
Jeremy Doyle December 9th, 2008, 02:48 PM I'm sure I'll scrap something together. Hopefully it'll have some quality.
Jay Silver December 9th, 2008, 03:41 PM Blocking I can handle, it's how to get the grizzly to deliver a line that has me worried!
This should be a really interesting round. I'm sure that having the two camps in the same race will definitely push us all to go farther and higher than ever before but I don't envy the judges having to compare apples and oranges (not to mention the inevitable mutant cross-breed apporangles) and make a final decision. Good luck just getting all the ballots straight!
I admit I was a little hesitant at first - and even more so after viewing a few past UWOL entries - but there's no way I'm going to miss this one. For better or worse I'm in and I'll see you all at the red carpet/finish line!

Trond Saetre December 9th, 2008, 03:54 PM Count me in!
This sounds like a really cool challenge.
Been sick for 6 weeks now (and counting...), but can't miss a chance to make a combined uwol/dv film.
Alex Chamberlain December 9th, 2008, 04:03 PM I'm in. Yes.
Josh Chesarek December 9th, 2008, 04:10 PM I will try again :)
Jeff Hendricks December 9th, 2008, 04:43 PM Looking forward to it...I'm in
Jeff
Dick Mays December 9th, 2008, 09:27 PM I have no problems being out in the open filming a grizzly bear but have an actor say "how do you want to block this?" and I get chills all down my spine. :)
The secret to working with actors, is making sure they get a chill down their spine, when you talk to them. Not sure if this works with grizzley bears...
Have all my days booked with either my kids, family or a prior film commitment (as an actor!) But maybe I can shoot something with my kids again. Either way, I will send a donation.
Mugurel Dragusin December 9th, 2008, 09:41 PM I am in, of course :)
Damn, *WHERE* is my hat???
Bruce Foreman December 9th, 2008, 11:07 PM I'm in physical therapy....
...But I'll find a way to do this too.
Inactivity (aside from being on the "rack" is killin' me.
Andrew Hood December 10th, 2008, 04:37 AM I'm up for it. Need to make up for the last few.
Lorinda Norton December 10th, 2008, 11:46 AM Howdy, UWOL! Remember me? I’m the one who so ably demonstrated the Shakicam at this contest last summer. For some reason it never caught on…
Anyway, it’s too bad Mereym and Dylan didn’t get their heads together on this joint adventure sooner; one word from Meryem about no December UWOL challenge and *POOF* --you all disappear! But I have something here that’ll bring everyone running! Don’t tell the DVC folks, but I’m gonna let you in on a big secret. They’d kill me upstairs if they knew I was giving you an edge (you know DVCers--always playing with guns) so remember, mum’s the word and here’s the secret:
The theme is …..”PEOPLE!”
.
.
.
Heh heh…not really… ;)
ACTUALLY, I think I overheard a conversation regarding the theme that would make the average, and not-so-average (which describes most of you) UWOLer sit up in his/her bird watching cover and think... "Hmm...I think I could do that!" :)
So come on in! Our donations will make some lucky charitable organization very happy, and you'll be glad you got out and shot another, or your first, UWOL film!
Clint Harmon December 10th, 2008, 11:56 AM The last 2 weeks of December I have nothing booked, look forward to my first entry.
Catherine Russell December 10th, 2008, 12:46 PM Yikes! This is a hectic time of year, but I'll give it a go. Meryem, you may want to e-mail the UWOL group, I never would have caught this if Trond hadn't have given me a heads up. Like Lorinda said, we all kind of go "poof" once it's declared there is no contest for December.
Also Mereym, want to fire me an e-mail? I'm so sorry we are not hooking up by phone!
Trond, how are you? Being sick for 6 weeks is a long time! What's up?
Happy holidays everyone.
Cat
Ken Bates December 10th, 2008, 12:52 PM I will be taking the fam on a 1200 mile Christmas trip during most of that time window..but I will give it a shot.
Roger Wilson December 10th, 2008, 01:59 PM Holidays are a busy time, but I'll give it a shot!
I'd be interested in teaming up with anyone from the Denver-metro area. I've got an XH-A1 and CS3 & CS4 master collection. Feel free to send me an email through the forums.
Roger
Steve Siegel December 10th, 2008, 09:43 PM I'd like to try, too.
Lorinda Norton December 10th, 2008, 11:58 PM I'm in.
The last 2 weeks of December I have nothing booked, look forward to my first entry.
Hey Clint,
Welcome to DV Info and The DV Challenge! Have a great time; looking forward to watching your film. :)
Note to Bruce Foreman: Seems you've been a long time at your current "occupation." I'm sorry to hear you're not 100%. About the "rack," at least you didn't mention the other device that [historically] goes along with it... ;)
To everyone: The theme will be posted sometime tomorrow (Thursday) but keep in mind that sign up will remain open through Jan. 1! So if you see this after the start date and want to jump in, go for it!!
Donations will be accepted through Jan. 1, as well. Check out the donations (http://www.dvinfo.net/conf/dv-challenge-our-semi-regular-contest/139346-donate-dvc-uwol-charity-pool-currently-140-a.html) thread for details.
Trond Saetre December 11th, 2008, 07:44 AM Trond, how are you? Being sick for 6 weeks is a long time! What's up?
I'm almost recovered again now. At least enough to carry around a camera. :)
It was something with my lungs and throat at the same time. Not fun.
Anyway, this UWOL/DVC challenge is special, so I really hope all of us sign up and make a video this time.
Yes yes, it's holidays and a busy time of year, but hey, UWOL/DVC is a great excuse to get away from the stressful life for a moment!
Come on guys and gals, SIGN UP, make a video and let's have FUN!!
James McBoyle December 11th, 2008, 08:15 AM I'm flying home to the UK and won't be back until after the deadline is past. I doubt I'll be able to take my main camera, just my little old SD camcorder due to size considerations, and I'll have to work from the laptop instead of the desktop pc too...
If I can get anything together with all these extra challenges, I'll be happy, so I might as well sign up and hope to get something show-able. :-)
Rob Evans December 11th, 2008, 01:20 PM ooh hello. Please count me in, not sure If I'll actually be able to produce anything beyond pictures of the contents of nappies, but i'll give it my best shot ;-)
Bruce Broussard December 11th, 2008, 02:41 PM and looking forward to participating in this combo challenge!
Tom Sherwood December 11th, 2008, 02:51 PM I'm on the edge of my seat today waiting to read the theme. Never been apart of this but seems like a great learning experience. If I can wrangle some friends to help out... I may just have a go at this.
Dale Guthormsen December 11th, 2008, 05:15 PM Good evening,
Sense I intended to do the las dv challenge and could not complete, I just about have to participate in this.
I only hope the topic is something I can actually do here in the winter!!!!
None of the kids home this christmas so I have no excuse for lack of time!!!
count me in!!!
Sean McHenry December 12th, 2008, 06:36 AM Late, as usual but still, count me in.
Hope it's a theme I can sink my teeth into. I haven't peeked yet. Off to do that next.
Sean
Hugh DiMauro December 12th, 2008, 11:31 AM I will try a narrative movie.
Per Johan Naesje December 12th, 2008, 03:04 PM Ok, I'm signing in... here too...
Robert Martens December 16th, 2008, 05:31 AM I may not be fashionable, but I am late! Tack me on the list, I'm sure I'll come up with some sort of movie.
Lisa Shofner December 17th, 2008, 05:40 PM I'm going to do this! A nice 5 day weekend followed by a 4 day weekend, no excuse not to get it done (right?). Now for a plan....hmmm...
Andris Krastins December 21st, 2008, 06:08 PM Okay, I sign up.
As I explained in another thread, I don't have any more free days up until 9th of Januar (even zero hours), but I did a quick and an unplanned shot this evening with some friends. Recently returned home, edited the 5 minutes of material I had and the film is ready.
It ain't much, but I want to participate. :)
Lorinda Norton December 21st, 2008, 10:47 PM That's the spirit! Good for you, Andris. Can't wait to see it. :)
Vidar Vedaa December 25th, 2008, 04:35 AM Ok I am in.

All best
VJV.

Lorinda Norton December 25th, 2008, 12:24 PM Yay! Come on in, Vidar; we've been waiting for you... :)
Tom Sherwood December 26th, 2008, 12:09 AM So is there an official sign up somewhere? Or is this it?
Lorinda Norton December 26th, 2008, 01:47 AM This is it!
Tom Sherwood December 26th, 2008, 03:42 PM I'm in then.
Can I use apple loops for music? I believe they are royalty free. Do I have to credit apple loops in the credits?
Sorry to be a bother
Lorinda Norton December 26th, 2008, 04:03 PM Any royalty free music is fine. And yeah, give 'em a line in your credits, though I can't remember whether or not it's in the rules. You can look it up if it's a concern to you time-wise or something.
Joseph Tran December 28th, 2008, 12:32 PM Back in town, and seeing the boards just now. Please count me in... we'll pull something together in the form of both a short film and a donation.
Lorinda Norton December 28th, 2008, 01:08 PM COOL!!! If I counted right that means we have the winners of eight DVCs plus at least two or three UWOL challenges in this contest. This is gonna be fun.... :)
Andris Krastins December 28th, 2008, 02:37 PM ummm, I'm totally broke, but I'll see if I can manage a small donation.
Lorinda Norton December 28th, 2008, 04:22 PM That's very cool of you, Andris, but this challenge isn't meant to be a hardship on anyone. Don't worry about it, okay? :)
Meryem Ersoz December 28th, 2008, 09:23 PM COOL!!! If I counted right that means we have the winners of eight DVCs plus at least two or three UWOL challenges in this contest. This is gonna be fun.... :)
Actually, we have four UWOL winners officially signed up -- and two more UWOL winners who have not officially signed up, but donated cash to the kitty, anyway.
They may show up at the 11th hour, who knows?? This could get very interesting!
Vidar Vedaa December 29th, 2008, 06:53 AM Hello Meryem
Chlarity-film

Meryem Ersoz December 29th, 2008, 08:18 AM Hi Vidar (and everyone else!): I put uploading instructions, including password info here:
http://www.dvinfo.net/conf/985469-post4.html
You won't get your usual e-mail sent to you about passwords and uploading, because this is an open sign-up, so the only way to reach everyone is here in the forums.
DVCers are also invited to cross-post their masterpieces to the UWOL film vault, if you like...
Let the games begin! Looking forward to everyone's work...
