I'm editing a shot film and have some footage that a couple are watching on TV. The video is fine but the audio is too good - how can I make it sound as if it's coming from the TV (quality wise).

I also have some audio that needs to sound like it's coming from down a hallway.

I've been playing around in Soundbooth but I'm not getting anywere.

any brilliant suggestions?

One way is to set up a speaker such as the TV you're trying to emulate, play the sound through it, and re-record it in the environment.

izotope's free Vinyl effect (vst, directx, max, rtas plugin) is mainly for duplicating the sound of old record players, but could also be used for lo-fi'ing sound.

How about using a 'radio effect' preset and then perhaps lowering the effect a touch?

I don't use Soundbooth (long time Sony Sound Forge user) but I see there are four presets in the Mastering Effect called AM Radio (Aggressive and Mild) and FM Radio (Aggressive and Mild). Also in the Stereo Rack Presets there is a preset chain called Voice: Old Time Radio. Try those out and adjust the settings to taste.

For the hallway sounds, I guess the final sound is going to depend on where the hallway is in relation to the action, and also whether it's a hallway in a hotel, hospital, nuclear bunker or school etc! Again using Soundbooth presets, try something like the Convolution Reverb preset A Distant Drummer (aggressive) coupled with a cut in the higher EQ bands.

Not really.... a lot of musicians these days want to make their music sound as if it comes from the 50s, 60s and 70s.....
