Exciting news for me, sort of. I have acquired an event that is going to require me to project onto a jumbotron. How do you think the Z1U will hold up being delivered onto the jumbotron.

We will be switching live and feeding that to the jumbo. Our goal is to feed the switcher with a component feed from the cameras. My hope is that the camera will hold up in this environment.

We have also looked at renting a fly pack to cover this event, however, if I can keep the cost down that would be great.

You really don't need a special camera for a jumbotron. It's just a large TV. It depends on the resolution of the screen. In our sports arena my boards are 11 years old, so the resolution is not the greatest. I've been able to put live footage from a GL-1 with acceptable results. I think the Z1u will be just fine. What matters more is how far the signal has to travel to get to the boards, and are you going to shoot 16:9 or 4:3 depending on the aspect of the boards.

The biggest issue will be whether the control room can accept a non-sync'd input, either thru a framestore sync switcher or an external frame synchronizer. If the video switcher is something like a Panasonic MX series or a Videonics MX series, no problem. If it's a Ross or Grass Valley or other more "professional/broadcast" supplier, you'll need external synchronization.

PS. I've done Video Board multi camera live since 1999 in sporting venues so feel free to pose questions.

PPS. Video boards NOTORIOUSLY don't like video levels over 100 IRE so be careful when shooting and/or creating motion or still graphics.
