I heard that the EX1/3 will shoot 4.3 in standard mode via s-video and analog audio connects. Is this true?
View Full Version : 4.3 mode ... Dean Harrington November 23rd, 2008, 04:46 PM I heard that the EX1/3 will shoot 4.3 in standard mode via s-video and analog audio connects. Is this true? Bob Willis November 23rd, 2008, 05:05 PM The EX1 will not shoot (record) in SD, it only records in HD which is 16:9. You can downconvert the camera recorded output as an SD signal that can be cropped to 4:3. Ian Briscoe November 23rd, 2008, 05:10 PM I wouldn't have thought so. It doesn't have an s-video connector. It has component and composite output. The manual states that the video format selected from the recording menu wil also be used for output over component and composite. None of those formats are 4:3. You can have a 4:3 frame on the LCD to help with composition but that's all. Ian Nick Wilson November 23rd, 2008, 05:33 PM You can set the Video Set/Down Converter menu setting to Edge Crop, which gives a 4:3 SD signal by discarding the edges of the 16:9 frame. Jay Gladwell November 23rd, 2008, 06:18 PM Yes, Dean, it's there. You can connect the camera to a monitor or television that has an S-video input. However, neither the output nor the image will be in SD or 4:3. The down conversion is best handled by your NLE. Dean Harrington November 23rd, 2008, 07:11 PM I'll mull this over and play with it. Jose Bucaro November 23rd, 2008, 07:15 PM Actually the Sony XDCAM Browser will down convert the footage too. Dean Harrington November 23rd, 2008, 08:09 PM You can set the Video Set/Down Converter menu setting to Edge Crop, which gives a 4:3 SD signal by discarding the edges of the 16:9 frame. Nick I'll try this via DRS 11 and see what happens. David Issko November 23rd, 2008, 10:42 PM Yes, Dean, it's there. You can connect the camera to a monitor or television that has an S-video input. I have no idea about the EX1 but the EX3 does output in SD and you can centre cut the image to give a 4x3 picture. As I mentioned in another thread, I found the composite image to be less than acceptable. Ian Briscoe November 24th, 2008, 03:44 AM Apologies - I didn't read the "/3" part of the post. The EX3 does have s-video, the EX1 doesn't. Ian Actually the EX-1 does have s-video output if you use the correct cable. It looks like the composite cable but with an extra doo-dad on it that's an s-video jack. It's sony part #182315613 David Issko November 25th, 2008, 05:30 AM David, would you, please, provide the documentation on that? Thanks! Hi Jay, I don't have my camera to hand but from memory, you can set the composite (& S-video) output via the menu (of course - is there any other way!!!!) to give the standard SD downconverts such as squeeze, & crop etc. Was that what you were after? I haven't tried the S output to compare its quality to the composite. Anyone compared the o/ps on the EX3? Hope this helps you. Best wishes David Issko |
