OK, so I'm a kind of "hiding under a rock" kind of guy when it comes to all this new stuff, but yesterday, whilst visiting one of the local dept. stores tech sections, noticed not only two sub $1k Blu Ray players, but a shed load of HDD recorders at very reasonable prices.

However:

We now have terrestrial HD, and in order to "time shift", are recording to "steam vcr" which is, natch, SD.

So, the question is:

Anyone seen an HD HDD (High Definition, Hard Disk Drive) recorder, with or without built in tuner, which will allow for the real time recording of HD "free to air" content?

I only ask as down here in NZ, we don't see any of this stuff till it's practically obsolete (I only partially jest).

Any sightings?

PS: You may safely discount the "with or without tuner" comment, the grey cell has worked out a recorder without tuner is a bit of a waste of time.

Freeview announces HD digital recorders - 06 Nov 2008 - NZ Herald: Technology, Computer, Mobile, IT, Games and Online News and Reviews (http://www.nzherald.co.nz/technology/news/article.cfm?c_id=5&objectid=10541308)

Guess I'll be checking my Christmas stocking for one of these then, tho' the "other manufactrers in 2009" sounds tasty.

see what I tripped over in my search...........

New Zealand's Digital TV Forum - dtvforum.co.nz (http://forum.dtvforum.co.nz/index.php)

Kinda spooky, even tho' I know this software isn't exactly bespoke.

you can buy an old D-VHS that has component and firewire output and use any PC based recorder with a intensity pro card.

Great theory, tho' the above gear could be a bit of an ask, this is NZ not NY, that sort of stuff doesn't exist here to my knowledge.

Think the missus might have a very dim view of me moving "the beast" of a PC into the lounge, as well.

Then, of course, there's the small matter of the Intensity Pro card which I seem to have somehow mislaid.

On balance I think it safer all round to just wait till the prices stabilise on the real thing.

Thanks anyway.
