So as not to hijack Blair Harrington's message "HV30 right for me?", I'll post a new question from part of his posting: "...people are simply shooting in HD and down-sampling to SD Widescreen..."
I'm new to the HV30 and have not yet tried to edit anything from it. Where are the settings to downconvert to SD when exporting from the camera?
This new HV30 user appreciates your guidance.

I know this is in the manual but I am not exactly sure what page. Here is how you do it:
In Playback mode go to Menu> Play/Out Setup2> DV Output> DV Locked

Chris,
Thanks for the reply. That seems simple enough.

No problem. I have yet to do it but it does seem very straight forward.

I wouldn't recommend you downconvert during capture,
shoot HD, capture HD, edit HD and render to whatever format you'd like to have, it'll give you noticable better picture quality as opposed to downconverting during the capture

Of course you'll need to have a faster computer than was needed to edit DV material, and editing software which can handle the HDV format.
The in camera conversion to DV does work well enough to match well with images from my GL-1.
