how do i bump up the contrast a bit on my a1 to save some post work which i always seem to have to do

You'll do that with a preset. But it's not trivial to my addled brain. Check the manual section on presets and then look at the preset sticky here. there's lots of information there that will help you out.

lower the master pedestal a bit...(subtle)

or

turn off black stretch...(coarse)
