hi All,

After lots of seamless experiences with 24PSF capture using HDLink and the Sony F series cameras, we bought a Canon XLH1s (full SDI spec version) for lower budget productions...and so far no joy :(

With the camera in 24PSF mode and the Cineform suggested 24PSF settings, audio is distorted and there is interlacing...unless I set capture to 59i with "remove 3:2 pulldown", in which case the audio is perfect and interlacing is gone, but we end up with 23.976 footage, which is not the point.

Has anyone had any experience with this camera and HDLink?

thanks,

Charles

Hey Charles,

I shoot with HD-SDI with that camera a lot. What you are doing there with 59.97i capture is correct. The 24P is embedded in the HD-SDI with a 3:2 pulldown to conform it to 60i.

So when you capture, you can either capture as 60i and do a reverse telecine in post or do it on the fly, as you had. Both will yield a 23.976 file (bringing it back to its native 24p).

Hope that helps.

Michael

Charles, Michael is correct. The Canon in 24F mode doesn't produce 24PsF (Progressive Segmented Frames) it only outputs 60i with 24/23.976 embedded with 3-2 pulldown. Fortunately the CineForm pulldown removal gives you exactly the same data as if the camera was outputting 24PsF.

Thanks for your responses.

David, you may want to let Jake know this...he's been telling me it should work at 24psf, and also the settings on the settings spreadsheet page of the Cineform site are wrong... no wonder I spent a lot of time wondering what was wrong.

HDLink Capture Settings (http://www.cineform.com/products/TechNotes/HDLinkCapSettings.htm) shows 24F, progressive, "no" for 3:2 pulldown.

Those settings are correct if you are capturing from tape or file based video, which 95% of HDLink users are. I gather you are capturing via HDSDI (Blackmagic or AJA?), and for the Canon 24F mode that is always 60i. I guess Jake didn't know you are using HDSDI.
