Just got my new Nikon to EX3 adapter made by Mike Tapa. Excellent craftsmanship and works great! I have used it with a range on Nikon lenses up to 600mm 5.6 and it delivers the goods ! Its great for wildlife as due to the small sensor relative to the 35mm sensor – you get a x5.5 crop factor !
It is basically a ring – no optics or automatic control but I use it with manual focus lenses. Histogram, peaking, zebra, works fine.
Here is a photo of the EX3 with a Nikon 600mmf5.6 mounted via the MTF adapter examined by my 15 months old assistant Jonathan Levy.

no rails?

Definitely don't wan't to add an Anton-Bauer or IDX battery on the back of that!

Don't doubt that it's Jonathan Levy, but surely it's the 500mm f4P, not the 600?
Excuse me for being such a Nikon geek!

Great shots!

But, oy, I would really be concerned about hanging an EX-3 off that lens without either rails or tripod support.

I wouldn't be too concerned

I wouldn't be too concerned, with that angle, it looks as though it will just swing down and hit the boy in the head... young Jonathan will prevent any real damage ;)

Your sense of humor is not appreciated!

Ofer, another option instead of having a support plate, if you get a second pan handle, you should be able to turn it so that it rests under the camera base and gives it some support.

Oh yes, Ofer - by all means, give some more support to your precious rig!

Don't do it just because we say so, your judgment is best, maybe we're all wrong and you can by without it. I know your position, being a wildlife photographer you want to keep everything as simple, and most importantly light as possible, so anything you can do without then great. I would worry about the integrity of cam and lens mounts, but also you'll probably get more shake if the two units are not both supported.
Very best wishes,
Steve

What the link or name of the adapter? Not to worry ... found it. Does anyone have an example of the 5.5X magnification factor the Tapa adapter gives?

It's MTF Services Ltd (http://www.mtfservices.com) Ex Optex engineer Mike Tapa. He's just re-jigged his website.

I just noticed that the company making the adapter also makes a support. Here is a link.

Lens and matte box support (http://www.mtfservices.com/mtf-products-list/lens-and-matte-box-support/63-lens-and-matte-box-support.html)

I know nothing about it, but, I thought some of you might be interested in knowing it exists.

That is exactly the kind of support I had in mind when I saw Ofer's set up.

I have one additional observation about the support. When looking at the photos of the support on the sellers website and the photo of the ex3 with the nikon 500 or 600mm lens on the tripod, the length of the rods seem like they may be too short for that lens.

I know that looks can be deceiving, so some specs on the support length and range of height and front/back adjustment for the lens support would be helpful.

Hi Eli,

I think you will find that the rails are changeable and you can state the lenght you require when you order. I have similiar ones from Truelens Services here in the UK

Here is an example of a camera plate that is attached to the bottom and back of the EX-3 making it a solid easy to use camera. Joe Sutherland (www.joesutherland.com) had it fabricated after 2 of his rental EX-1s had tripod sockets damage. He wanted to minimize any potential problems with the heavier interchangeable lenses on the EX-3s. Precision Camera Inc. (www.pci-canada.com) in Toronto makes them in a nice black anodized finish.

Mike

Thanks for the comment. I did not see any information on their web site re rail length, but will look for rail length information in the future.

For my purposes, I may not need rails as my primary reason for looking at the adapter is to use my 80-400mm nikon lens on the ex3. While not light, the lens is not nearly the weight of that which Ofer was using and is probably not too much different than the stock ex3 lens.

I also want to look further at their adapter selection. Besides the one made specifically for the ex3 (5.5 multiplier) they also make one which seems to attach to a standard 1/2 inch adapter (7 multiplier) - however, while listing some specific cameras with which that adapter will work, they do not specifically state that it will work on an ex3.

Again, thanks for the comment.

One quick - and perhaps dumb - newbie question. When 35 mm lenses are used on the ex3 with an adapter, is there a drop in the f rating of the lens - as there is when a teleconverter is used on a 35mm still camera (eg f2.8 lens with 2x converter becomes f5.6).

My logic says there should be no drop, but an answer from someone who knows would be helpful.

Thanks.

No drop in f stop at all.
