Hi there
As I was perusing the net I came across a used EX1 for sale but the serial number was S01-00108165. As far as I know, there's no way that that can be, correct? (Unless it was S01-00100165 (i.e. camera number 165) and mistyped.)
Is there a serial number registry anywhere?
Thanks!

Thanks! I would be very careful in this regard. I have only seen 6 digit serial numbers. All of these camera's in the states are numerical, serial # wise.( @ least the ones i have viewed). I can tell you a camera was fraudulently purchased in Atlanta Georgia. The buyer was an out of state individual. Provided I.D and a credit card. Both fraudulent. The vendor was Showcase Video. Very good company. Sad that there are individuals out there that would do such a thing. I do know there is a complete manufacturer's list regarding ser# on the SOLD camera's in the USA.
It would be a shame if someone purchased an illegally or gray market acquired camera. Once you send it in for a FIREWARE or service upgrade, you may be very disappointed with the outcome. If you feel uncomfortable about this particular kit, a call to sony would go a long way. I am sure someone would direct you to the proper department with a list of sold EX-1's
