Im currently trying to design a video cover. I'm taking stills from my film but when I reduce their size in photoshop, they look real pixelated - anyone got any tips on how to combat this?
Any general tips for design you're supposed to stick to?

As far as design rules, there really is no such thing. Just try to use common sense. If it looks good, then go with it. However, there are things to avoid, such as too many subjects and fonts. That tends to be too busy, and often dissorienting.

As for your pictures, can you give me a bit more info on how your are going about the process?

i have started a project in photoshop, mapping out the size of the cover on this new page.
Ive gone into premiere and saved 'frames' from my film. ive then opened these frames as seperate pages in photoshop. used that dotty square tool (sorry), gone round the newly opened picture -frame - and pressed copy. closed the pic, rehighlighted the cover page and pressed paste. the frame is now on my cover page. then tried to resize it and it goes all blocky.

It will get pixelated, but will usually clean up when you save/accept the changes. You might want to try and save the images in a high resolution, like 300 DPI.
