I was wondering if anyone out there knows if it would be possible, with service from Canon, to upgrade the first generation camera's [XL1 model], so that they would be able to display the 16x9 framing guide lines available in the XL1s? The "16x9 Mode" is already available. It can't be too complicated to have a few extra 'lines" in the viewfinder.

In theory it might be possible, but I highly doubt they would do
this for you. It might be easier to just buy a small monitor or
LCD screen and tape [with removable tape!] the guidelines on
there yourself.

How does one figure out exactly where the 16x9 frame should be on the monitor? Thanks.

You can make a simple image in a paint package and convert
that to DV. Now hook up the monitor and display the image on
it. You can then tape the correct "lines".

According to my calculator (http://www.geocities.com/robvisuar/calc.htm):

NTSC: each bar must be 58 pixels high. Remaining picture is 364 pixels high
PAL: each bar must be 72 pixels high. Remaining picture is 432 pixels high

You can download my masks from that URL as well. Convert it
into DV and output it to your monitor.

I burned a DVD, using a simple menu system to access 1:78:1, 1:85:1 and 2:35:1 masking frames to set up a 4X3 monitor for widescreen applications. If anyone would like one let me know and I will burn one for you for $10.
