That may be interesting, but based on the upgrade which was needed to support the new Sony PHU-60K drive, I'll bet you need v1.1

Brian, is it possible to overcrank with your combo in S&Q mode?

The SDHC cards are not fast enough for overcranking.

Brian Rhodes
September 18th, 2008, 06:01 PM
Brain,

Does it absolutely require firmware 1.11 or will it work with firmware 1.05?

John

Yes requires the 1.11 update

You're probably correct about this.

For S&Q mode stick to your SxS.

Kensington 7 in 1 model k33407us. Transend 8gb SDHC model ts8gsdhc6. Tested with EX1 all modes SP and HQ 28min each mode no errors.

That's strange because I bricked my Transcend 8GB SDHC card when I tried to format it with the EX1 and Kensington adapter, maybe bad luck. Certainly would be a good inexpensive solution if it did work. I did get the Sandisk 16GB Extreme III 30MB/second card to work well.

Any errors with the 16gb in HQ mode?

Any errors with the 16gb in HQ mode?

So far the Sandisk Extreme 30MB 16GB card it has worked fine. Haven't extensively tested it but I ran several minutes of 1080 30P HQ, with no glitches. Didn't work in slo mo recording, as that needs higher throughput.

Steven Thomas
September 18th, 2008, 07:49 PM
I'm performing more tests tonight in HQ mode with the Kensington and new Extreme III 16GB 35MB/s. I have yet been able to make this combo error.

Actually, it's working great "so far". This is only my second day, but it looks promising.

I can take the Extreme SDHC card into my card reader and play the files right from the SDHC card and they play back full 1920x1080P HQ footage smooth without any issues or stutter.

These new Extreme cards are REAL fast.

Nikon worked with SanDisk to make sure this card would work with the new Nikon D90 with its fast image acquisition and movie mode.

It's kind of slick just pulling the small SDHC card out and having quick and clean access to your files. Just leave the expresscard adapter in the camera.

PROExpress 7 in 1 reader: Newegg $31.98
Panasonic 8GB SDHC: B&H $75.20
Total $107.18

Details:
- Reader and card fit in the camera with the door closed
- Turn on camera "Need to format media" ... I blinked it was done
Camera set to 720P HQ, LCD reads 28 minutes available
- Recorded a couple quick bursts (3-5 seconds) works fine
Left camera for a long chunk, Media Error around :20 min (restored, clips were all fine)
- S&Q Motion (720P S&Q 60) Media Error after a few seconds (expected, no?)

I did try to run the Crystal CPUID software. But I can't for the life of me figure out what I need to do to run this thing? Too many options. Anyways, its working.

Too many Media errors... excitement level dropping

Yes Andrew, I gave up with the AFT adapter.

It would not even work at all with the new Extreme SDHC 16GB 30MB/s memory.

The Kensington is working flawless (so far on day two) with all modes. I can not get it to fail.

The only thing that does not work is S&Q mode, but no big deal, When I want slo-mo, I'll slap in one of my SxS cards.

You should try the Kensington with your Panasonic SDHC.

I'd be interested in seeing the data rate numbers using thw Crystal DiskMark software I posted earlier. Also, you really need to watch this software run and record each of the tests it performs five times. It over writes each cycle. It only takes one bad write or read for a card not to be "good enough".

If/when you get the Kensington memory, let us know if it works with the Panny memory.
The new Extreme memory is really fast. This is working great on day two of my testing.

I bought this card reader from Maplin, only £15.

12 in 1 Laptop Express Card Reader > Maplin (http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=99520)

I haven't got the firmware upgrade yet but for anyone else doing the card/adaptor experiments this could be another one to try.

Paul, I'm not sure this will work as on the Maplin site it says:

A) Not SDHC compatible.

Upgraded to v1.11. Tried Lexar 8GB card. Performance is ok not stellar.
Limitations so far...

1. to go from record to stby to record again, if done too quickly will cause error and the card will need to be restored.

2. Found that waiting at least 2 secs between buttoning off and on will stop the error occurring.

3. when comparing against Sony card, sony wrote info from cache to card in 4 secs from recording stop, ie activity light above card went from red to green.
Lexar 8 Gb took 9 secs to do the same.

4. removing several clips from a full card and trying to record again caused the restore error, as the card is too slow in a random write.

Rules so far,

1. Start with clear card
2. don't delete any clips
3. leave at least 2-3 secs between records.

Fine for linear records like seminars/presentations.
will try the 16GB to see if it is similar in the constraints as above, or how much worse it is.

Hi Steve,

Have you tried the Sandisk Multi Card ExpressCard™ Adapter ? I ask because I am having trouble finding the AFT, and after ringing Kingston, they told me the 33407 is obsolete in Australia!

Paul Newman
September 19th, 2008, 07:50 AM
I've ordered this

Sandisk Multi Card ExpressCard™ Adapter
SDAD-109-A11

at least it says it will handle SDHC cards on the unit.

Worth a punt...

I had exactly the same issues with the Lexar, clean card, long record no problems, but I've never lost
any data after restores.

This is great, so many possibilities, some work, some won't - I'm gonna have the largest collection of adapters and media - never mind, it'll all get used, I'm normally shooting with 3 EX1's so I'm keen to resolve this issue.

Paul

Just off to the bar to pick up my mail, should be some Kensington/AFT and various media to test!

report later.

But I believe the SandDisk reader was found to not work in the EX1. It's posted here or in the "other" forum... Or maybe I'm mistaken.

Steven Thomas
September 19th, 2008, 09:22 AM
Yes,

The adaptors need to be SDHC compatible.
So far the working combo for the EX1 in all HQ modes (not S&Q):

Kensington 7-in-1 Media Reader & (NEW) SanDisk Extreme III 16GB SDHC 30MB/s version.

I'm on day 3 and have not seen one error.

I'm looking forward to trying the new SanDisk Extreme III 32GB SDHC 30MB/s version.

Also, although the Kensington card is working great so far, I am still looking for other expresscard adapters
that will work and allow the EX1 memory compartment to close.

The AFT allows it to close, but does NOT work with the EX1.

Hi Joe,

After I posted I did read somewhere that the Sandisk didn't work.

It's funny that these manufacturers would produce to an Expresscard standard but not bother about one of the dimensions. ie the Kensington is too long as well.

thanks anyway.

Steven Thomas

Actually all expresscards are all the same length 75mm.

It's the SDHC media that may stick out to far in some, such as the Kensington.

I believe there are only 4 to 5 manufacturers of the adapters. The spring loading type will allow you to close the door on the EX1 , But none work with the EX1 so far.

I am ordering another
Kensington 7 in 1 Media Reader for ExpressCard Slot" model number 33407EU.
3 more Trendsend 8bg SDHC cards and 2 Sandisk SDHC Extreme III 16gb cards. Already own 4 16gb Sony SXS cards. I will wait until there is a major price drop to order more Sony or Scandisk SXS cards. I am Done testing for now..I think...lol

Thanks Brian.

The SIIG 11-in-1 expresscard card (spring type) does not work because it's not SDHC capable.
Fry's Electronics has this card. Fortunately I only live 30 minutes from a Frys! LOL

SIIG's web site shows a 12-in-1 that list SDHC, so if it has the "spring type" (known as : pusp/push) and it works of course, the EX1 memory door should close with the SDHC media inserted.

The odd thing is I can not find the SIIG 12-in-1 anywhere. AND most important, the number they list for the new SIIG 12-in-1 is the same number on their 11-in-1 that does not work.

I've written to them regarding this problem.

Sorry Brian,
I did not understand your response.

Did you try the SIIG 12-in-1 (not the 11-in-1)?

Could you write the make and model of the exact expresscard R/W adaptors you just tried so I don't make the mistake of buying these?

I do not own the EX3, but I do own the EX1.

Hi Steve,

Can the SDHC card be "trimmed" by the 1mm or so needed to fit?

LOL,
Maybe yours! LOL..
Just kidding..

The door issue is not a show stopper. Afterall, when using Sony's new video capture drive you have to leave the door open.

Also, I can only imagine it will not be long before we find an expresscard adaptor with the needed push\push spring type media socket that will work with the EX1. This type of socket allows the SDHC card to sit real low in the adaptor.

The AFT has this feature, but does not work with the EX1.

The door issue is not a show stopper. Afterall, when using Sony's new video capture drive you have to leave the door open.

And if you're just using one card, you can put it in the front slot and slide the access door partially closed over slot 2.

Matthew at "another" forum sparked this next test:

Ok..
I performed a quick test for S&Q.

Camera set to 720 24P S&Q ON at 40 FPS. (Almost half speed) I had no errors, but I only ran if for 5 minutes or so.
It failed when S&Q was set to 45.

During playback, since the resultant overcrank S&Q file maintains the 35mbps (40mbps peak), the S&Q record data rate must maintain a linear relationship; therefore, overcranking at 40FPS at 24FPS: 40FPS / 24FPS = ~ 1.66X

Data rate linear relationship:
The base recording data rate (HQ in this case 35mbps (peak at 40mbps) So,
40mbps x 1.66 = 66.4 mbps. Which is the same as 8.3MB/s

Bear in mind longer tests would need to be taken, but based on the S&Q mode overcranking a 24P mode at 40 FPS without failing it appears the Kensington 7-in-1 Expresscard adaptor and Extreme III 30MB/s SDHC is capable of 8.3MB/s.

Since the EX HQ modes top out at (40mbps/8)= 5MB/s and this combo is capable of 8.3MB/s, this leaves 40% headroom while running all HQ modes. This is good news and explains why this combo works well!

Although 8.3MB/s is good news, you can't help but wonder why not a higher data rate.
I've clocked the SDHC card and it over 15MB/s read and write sustained.

I now REALLY believe the bootleneck is how Sony is offering the data rate over USB at this port. It for sure explains why their own drive will not support S&Q mode.

Day three testing the expresscard adaptor / Extreme SDHC in the EX1:

1, Kensington 7-in-1 Media Reader $ 36 (USD)
1, SanDisk Extreme III 16GB 30MB/s version $129 (USD)

No issues recording or playing any of the HQ or SP modes (No S&Q)

Today I tried the above combo but with the 8GB-card. So far it has been performing exactly like the SxS-cards with exception of S&Q (which I have not tried).
First I filled the card with random short and long clips here at the office and then I went out filming. I threw away bad takes just like I usually do and no issues!
Filled up the card and I am copying it to my PC now. It is much slower copying though but for 1/8:th of the price of a SxS-card I don't mind!

Has anyone had any errors using the Sandisk Extreme III? I am tempted to start using it in production.
