View Full Version : SDHC substitute for SxS cards
Steven Thomas November 29th, 2008, 09:39 AM I think we may be in danger of going round in circles here, so I am going to make this my last post on the subject.
Thank you.
Nobody really cares if someone is opposed or approves to using different memory.
Jay Gladwell November 29th, 2008, 10:19 AM I'm curious...
Has anyone considered or had the thought that the alleged firmware update (December) for the EX3 may contain a "fix" that would prevent the use of the SDHC combination?
Is Sony planning a firmware update for the EX1 as well?
Or am I just being paranoid?
Andy Wilkinson November 29th, 2008, 11:18 AM Just a quick post to report that my second Kensington Express card adapter arrived today and all works perfectly with a new Transend 16GB SDHC Class 6 card as expected. My EX3 just asked me to to reformat the media on insertion and then all was good to go.
My other Kensington (paired with a Sandisk Ultra II a couple of weeks back) is also still working absolutely fine (despite the few media error messages I initially got the first time I used it - see posts by me a while ago on this thread).
Gabriel Chiefetz November 30th, 2008, 01:58 AM For North American folks, as previously mentioned, I'm talking to a U.S. company about an adapter. So there will be more than one available option depending on where you are in the world.
This is very exciting news Chris! I've already damaged the door on my EX1 by leaving it open whilst using the Kensington. An adapter that allowed the door to close properly would really expand the range of shoots that I could take on. I would pay a premium over the Kensington or another adapter in order to allow for the door to close. Cheers!
Brian Rhodes November 30th, 2008, 10:16 PM Case Logic Model number jds6
Six cards can fit in this case see attachment
Larry Huntington November 30th, 2008, 11:45 PM Any news on the availability of the new Sandisk Ultra II SDHC 32GB cards?
Alex Raskin November 30th, 2008, 11:53 PM Just ordered the case - thanks Brian! :)
Here's the link (http://www.amazon.com/gp/search?ie=UTF8&keywords=B0009Y7AX2&tag=mo7iescom-20&index=electronics&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=9325)for others. Only $5, and ships free!
I also bought and used another CaseLogic case, which fits 2 combos plus the entire Sennheiser ew100 G2 set in a very compact case (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000HDJT4S?ie=UTF8&tag=mo7iescom-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B000HDJT4S). Super happy with that one.
Jay Gladwell December 1st, 2008, 10:23 AM Alex, that's ships free with order of $25 or more.
Alex Raskin December 1st, 2008, 10:28 AM Jay - but of course :) So what I did, I added a prop gun needed for my new short film to the same order. Now the entire order ships free. I really liked the larger CaseLogic case (see my prev. post, so I'm sure Brian's suggestion is also right on target.
Joe Lawry December 1st, 2008, 03:06 PM Just tested a Panasonic Class 6 32gig card in a Delkin adapter, no dice. I didnt think it was going to work but thought i'd test it anyone as i knew someone with the panasonic card.
Steven Thomas December 1st, 2008, 03:15 PM Actually, I believe the Panasonic 16GB card also does not work.
Joe Lawry December 1st, 2008, 03:20 PM Good to hear, glad its not my Delkin adapter, currently waiting on my Sandisk card to arrive.
Rob Fiedler December 1st, 2008, 04:27 PM I believe this is other Delkin Card.
Thats the pic from the box same pic is on the version one and version two box you will have to look at the actual card.
Hi Brian. Just to confirm. Here is a shot of the box and the enclosed card. This Delkin card (with no logo) seems to work. The Sandisk extreme snaps in flush and the door on the EX1 closes. The number on the box for the Delkin efilmExpressCard34 is DDEXP34-6in1-1
I got mine from Adorama at 34.95
Thanks for all the great info on this forum
Steven Thomas December 1st, 2008, 05:14 PM Be careful on ordering the Delkin expresscard.
It has been reported that it appears the card that works is actually the older card.
The newer card has the logo DD which does NOT work.
Tuomas Sebastien December 1st, 2008, 05:56 PM I've just ordered the new one from ebay few days ago.
It was linked on this forum earlier
Just my luck. Anyone have any experiences about the new one?
Scott Hayes December 1st, 2008, 06:32 PM i ordered two and cancelled orders on the Kensingtons. i may open one up and try it
when they get here, if not, back they go. $5 on shipping not a big deal.
Brian Luce December 1st, 2008, 07:49 PM The Kensington 7in1 seems to be extinct, like the dinosaurs. Anyone know an alternative? I hoping to avoid reading all 1200 posts in this thread. It's for ex3 so the door closing thing doesn't matter.
Brian Rhodes December 1st, 2008, 08:17 PM Brian when I receive My Delkin readers I will sell some of my Kensingtons
Brian Luce December 1st, 2008, 08:48 PM Thanks! We Brians have to stick together.
Is there an advantage to the Delkins?
Steven Thomas December 1st, 2008, 08:53 PM The door closes on the EX1 with the "correct" Delkin card.
Andy Wilkinson December 2nd, 2008, 04:48 AM There are some (two) early reports on the web that this might work for all but overcranking in a similar way to the Kensington. More information will come no doubt come soon (or just google it).
Expresscard Multi-card Adapter (http://www.delkin.com/products/adapters/expresscard34/6in1.html)
This has been posted here and elsewhere but......just to stress this. The card I originally linked to (which works, allows EX1 door to close etc.) is in fact the OLDER one and at this time is discontinued by Delkin (!). Web reports suggest that the newer version (has the big DD logo on the side) unfortunately DOES NOT WORK for SxS substitution. A helpful post on another forum suggests that Delkin are very responsive to the idea of reviving the older version, linked above (now they know of the potential EX1/EX3 market). No doubt we'll hear more information soon.
I don't have either but I just don't want people rushing around ordering the wrong Delkin cards until this is sorted out - especially since forum posting still seems a bit messed up/hit and miss at the moment!
Brooks Graham December 2nd, 2008, 06:21 AM I'm visiting Akihabara, which is a district in Tokyo that must be seen to be believed - there is every possible electronic item for sale here. Including the Kensington cards. Yesterday I went to a large store near my hotel and bought all their stock on display (three cards). Today I went back and they replenished their supply.
Now I'm happy with the three I have, but I probably could be talked into returning one or more times to repeatedly clean them out and bring them back to the states.
They are 4950 Yen which, with the 10-year low in the exchange rate, is about USD$50 each.
Just thought I'd offer.
Steven Thomas December 2nd, 2008, 06:43 AM Brooks,
I've been there a couple times, electronics everywhere. You can actually walk there from the Ueno exit which is close. The parent company I work for is located in Kumagaya.
I was surprised on how expensensive everything was.
$50 each is expensive.
Brooks Graham December 2nd, 2008, 06:54 AM Yeah, some stuff is definitely more expensive here. I'm sure it's partly due to the horrible exchange rate, but not entirely. I saw an EX1 for a bit under 900,000 Yen - which seems way too high even if the exchange rate was back where it was a few years ago.
Down the street, however, I picked up a name-brand 2GB SD card for the equivalent of USD$3.
You want good deals on small parts? Good deals abound. Deals on big ticket items? Not so much.
Benni Katz December 2nd, 2008, 07:19 AM Hey all,
just wanted to report that my sandisk ultra 2, which arrived today, works without any problems when overcranking at 50fps
Matthew Hurley December 2nd, 2008, 05:05 PM After viewing the individual who was kind enough to post his video on how to ( Cut ) a Ultra 2 SDHC card in order for you to close your EX-1 door, i took it upon myself to do the same.
But with a little twist. Instead of physically cutting the card, i took it and ground off the exses plastic on with my bench grinder.
Now i have 2 cards i can still easily remove from my Kensington adapter AND close my EX-1 door.
I have to tell everyone here. This was so simple it amazed me. Took me all of 5 minutes to do 2 cards.
Tested the cards up to 50fps. Zero problems. I will post pic,s shortly.
Ed Kukla December 2nd, 2008, 05:11 PM Is the Kensington adapter available or not?
Some web sites show it's back ordered but some show it seems to be available. I haven't actually tried to order, perhaps they are not up to date?
Ronn Kilby December 2nd, 2008, 05:23 PM Just an FYI - I've been using the SanDisk 16GB cards in the Kensington but today I got 2 Transcend 16GB from Amazon ($34 each) and can overcrank consistently 60fps at 30p, 48fps at 24p with no errors. Can only do about 50fps at 30p on the SanDisks. I'll still use the SxS cards for overcranking, but this is a good indication of the data rate improvement.
Alex Raskin December 2nd, 2008, 05:23 PM Ed, Amazon just canceled my Kensington order that was supposed to be fulfilled by Beach Audio.
So I'm sure your mileage will vary depending on which supplier still has remaining stock.
I'd imagine not much is left anywhere, at this point.
Chris Hurd (owner of this site) and others reported that they are working with some manufacturers to produce a Kensington alternative - which also will allow EX1 door to close.
I guess we shall wait and see at this point.
Some people report success with Delkin adapter, but there's a confusion which of 2 modifications to buy, as only one works.
Leonard Levy December 2nd, 2008, 05:40 PM I'm new to this discussion and don't want to wade through 80 pages so:
Are there any downsides to these cards besides
- can't always close the door
and
- limitations on slow mo speed.
Any reported issues of reliability?
Does the camera communicate with them as fully as Sony cards in the review mode for erasing and checking footage?
Its hard to believe there is a Santa Claus.

Jason Davenport December 2nd, 2008, 05:56 PM Here, read one page.
http://www.dvinfo.net/conf/sony-xdcam-ex-cinealta/138485-summary-sdhc-substitute-sxs-cards.html
Steven Thomas December 2nd, 2008, 05:58 PM Yes, SDHC works great.
You can do everything you can do with the SxS except overcrank at higher rates above 40FPS or so. Well, at least safely.
If you need to overcrank, just use your SxS card. No big deal.
Dave Tyrer December 2nd, 2008, 06:05 PM I mananged to pick up two Kensington cards today in the UK @ £14.94 each....all I need is an EX to put them in.
Matthew Hurley December 2nd, 2008, 06:30 PM Left photo is side by side comparison of modified and unmodified cards.
Right photo is side by side comparison of modified card in Kensington adapter and unmodified card in Kensington adapter.
Card was modified using a bench grinder.
Now my EX-1 door closes. JOY!
Brian Rhodes December 2nd, 2008, 09:11 PM Don't try this at home kids this video was done by a trained professional Card shaver...lol
I think I will wait on the Delkins although it want have any effect on the SanDisk card it’s all plastic from the back end to the logo.

Robert Young December 2nd, 2008, 11:37 PM RE the Delkin reader: I just received 2 from Amazon.com (actually was fulfilled by Adorama).
They work like a charm in the EX1 with the San Disk 16 GIG cards, the door closes, and they look and handle just like an SxS card.
The Delkin version I have has the "eFilm" logo as shown here:
Amazon.com: Delkin ExpressCard 34 6-In-1 ExpressCard 34 Card Adapter: Electronics (http://www.amazon.com/Delkin-ExpressCard-34-Card-Adapter/dp/B000M5U8KU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1228282548&sr=1-1)
Scott Hayes December 3rd, 2008, 07:02 PM i just wanted to confirm i got mine today, same ones from Adorama, and they work perfectly.
i may order a couple more, but with these cards, they never need to leave the camera.
so long Kensington and Lexar SSDs.
Steven Thomas December 3rd, 2008, 07:10 PM Adorama now shows these as not in stock...
Robert St-Onge December 3rd, 2008, 07:46 PM Adorama now shows these as not in stock...
Steven, just an update
I wrote to DELKIN about my order at Adorama and several other things, here is what they wrote back to me:
"If it is on back order through Adorama then they are probably waiting on a shipment from us which means that the one that they will ship you is the MULTI.
The first generation one we made was the DDEXP34-6IN1-1 and this was the one that the SD/SDHC card sat flush in and would work for the application you want it for. That one was discontinued (I have no idea why) and the MULTI took its place. Apparently we are scrambling to get the first generation ones back because of the “sudden demand” so YES we will be getting the originals back BUT I cannot say when that will be."
BTW, Delkin customer service is really great! They have been very helpful and fast as well.
So the Multi is the new one : DDEXP34-MULTI-1 .....the one to avoid
This is the one people should look for: DDEXP346IN11
Scott Hayes December 3rd, 2008, 08:05 PM man, there must be a dedicated bunch of us fools out there wiping out stock of this item.
Ed Kukla December 3rd, 2008, 08:18 PM Have any of you who are using the CF cards had any failures (excepting overcranking)?
Any dropouts, lost files, corrupted files, formatting problems, any type of glitches using the cheap cards instead of the expensive sony SxS cards?
Anything at all?
Brian Luce December 3rd, 2008, 08:42 PM I ordered early this morning from Aldorama, at the time their website was showing "In stock". Hopefully they'll send the good ones if they send anything at all.
Steven Thomas December 3rd, 2008, 08:58 PM Ed you mean SDHC cards, right?
I have been using them for 2.5 months with no issues.
Steven Thomas December 3rd, 2008, 09:04 PM Yes, ordered two yesterday, apparently a good thing..
I guess we're just bad luck. Why is it every card we find that works gets discontinued.
We're bad luck to a hunting dog I say! lol
Well fingers crossed, Delkin may just revive this card.

I got 4 today from Adorama/Amazon and same story - works great, door closes. "e-film" version.
Robert C. Fisher December 3rd, 2008, 10:07 PM Well I need 2 of these does anyone know of any in stock?
Robert C. Fisher December 3rd, 2008, 10:08 PM Will the new Delkins work if I shave the SD cards? I have a grinder!
Ronn Kilby December 3rd, 2008, 10:11 PM Will the new Delkins work if I shave the SD cards? I have a grinder!
I think the "NEW" Delkins will not work at all. The new ones are the ones with the DD logo, the old ones (that do work) have the "e-film" logo.
In the old ones, if you got the shaved card in, you'd never get it out.
Robert C. Fisher December 3rd, 2008, 10:47 PM The Delkins I ordered looked like they didn't have the DD Logo but were newer. I am hoping I can get at least 4 adapters that work. I don't mind shaving cards but they do have to move pixels. I had placed an order with an Amazon store that indicated they had stock but they lied! My order was cancelled this morning. I think I got a few older Delkins from Adorama but I won't know till they show. I also ordered 2 of the chinese generics but got an email saying it would be 10-20 days before I get them, Damn!
I hope some of the new cards will show up sooner than later.
Brian Rhodes December 3rd, 2008, 11:09 PM Will the new Delkins work if I shave the SD cards? I have a grinder!
I ordered 10 Delkins two days ago just received the tracking number from Adorama after they come in I will prob. sell my Kensington readers. Each reader comes with a free X-Acto knife..lol
