Hi guys. I can't seem to find a Helipoan circ. pol. filter (58mm) that also has a front thread as I would be interested in being able to attach my WD-58 on the end (yes I know the potential risk ;)).

I can find Hoya ones but I would like Heliopan for the quality if I could.

I can also get Marumi where I am but don't know much about them and couldn't find much in the net regarding quality of these filters.

Yes, Heliopan have them both in their regular line and slim line. And they both have threads in the front. They also have warming polarizers and polarizers for wide angle lenses/adaptors.

Thanks Frank. Now correctme if I'm wrong but the Wide Angle ones are only of use if they're on the front of the adapter right? I can't see why they'd matter if theyre behind it cause the adpater has already focuses the light correctly.

The polarizer is for the front of the adaptor, as far as I know. The main function of the polarizer is to cut or mask the glare. A wide angle adaptor's function is to capture a wider field of view.

Yeah I imagine its for the front, but unfortunately the WD-58 doesn't have a front thread :(

Aaron: I am purchasing a WD-58H from B&H tomorrow for my GL2, and was wondering about filters. It seems like putting it on the front of the wide converter would introduce vignetting. Could it be sandwiched inbetween the camera and the adapter? That may work on other types of filters, but I don't know if the polarizer would perform properly on the light being behind the adapter.

Could someone help on this?

Hi Frank. You don't have a choice with the WD-58; there is no front thread on the adapter so you have to use a filter between the camera and adapter or use a matte box.

I think I'll just go with a non-wide circular polariser.


Good luck with your adapter. I haven't had much chance to shoot with it yet. Inside stuff where there are more straight edges isn't too hot but I can't wait to get out and film some live subjects.

Why not go with just a nice big lens hood (forget filters), or a matt box/hood?

Frank: Seems like that would be the way to go. But those things are more 'spensiver than I had imagined. :-)

A good lens hood should be about the same price as a Heliopan polarizer. Honestly, I would forget about putting a filter on between the lens and lens adaptor. The polarizer threads probably won't even hold the adaptor.
