No, it's not a phantom power mic, also it has only a minijack plug.

Ok,

Maybe someone can explain better than me but I'll try my best.
So, the Bias is only the fixed +3V on the Mic (Plug in Power) used for the original camcorder mic alim.

To use another mic you can choice the mic you want.
- Some needs Phantom Power (not provide on this camcorder), it's necessary to use external unit (ex : Beachtek DXA6 (http://www.beachtek.com/dxa6.html))
- some needs internal battery (ex : Rode NTG2 (http://uk.rodemic.com/microphone.php?product=NTG-2))
- Some works alone (ex : Shure SM58 (http://www.shure.com/ProAudio/Products/WiredMicrophones/us_pro_SM58-CN_content))

The last thing is to convert from balanced to unbalanced for this you can use a Beachtek DXA2s (http://www.beachtek.com/dxa2s.html).

thinking of getting this or the panasonic...
Which Panasonic you speak about ?

The panasonic is the... AG-HMC70 the sony is the Sony HVR-HD1000

Guess I need to decide in the next few hours... yes examine the audio on the panasonic also.

The panasonic records to dshc cards and has xlrs but no focus ring. I wonder also which optical image stab, is better? sony's or panasonic?

I'm sure you will do the best choice for your needs.

HVR- HD1000 is HDV
AG-HMC70 is AVCHD

They are not the same HDV vs AVCHD (http://eugenia.gnomefiles.org/2007/09/30/hdv-vs-avchd/).

Comparaison test (http://camcorder-test.slashcam.com/compare-what-i-cmp-u-cmd-i-view-u-mode-i-docompare-u-lang-i-en-i-sortby-i-preis-u-id-i-77-y-78-u-name-i-Panasonic-s-AG-HMC70-u-bname-i-Sony-s-HVR-HD1000-u-cmd-i-vergleich.html) (not complet)

Good choice, and give us news

It is a hard choice between these cameras... I wonder which is better at lower light.

I probaby need to spend about 8k for a camera to do all I want plus be light sensitive but.... that is more than I have to spend!

I wonder if sony vegas 8 handles the avchd format well too... I know it will work well with hdv.

a pity the ones that fits a couple of the other units will not work with this... I wonder how it interfaces.....

the sony looks a little nasty at 12 lux in this comparison table... I wish it showed what the payy looked like...

On the subject of audio I am very impressed by the limiter on Sony cameras. The FX1000 is very good again.

Whilst I like Panasonic pictures better than Sony I have found that on the Pana DVC30 the audio limiter was woefull and since buying a FX1000 I am over the moon knowing audio will be much under control.

A good limiter in a camera saves heaps in post for me. I film dance concerts and stage plays and the dynamic range is massive. No more "hot" spikes.

Re XLR I am going to need an audio balun box that is small and good quality. I plugged a mini jack connector from a mixing desk into the FX1000 and had "buzz" appear after it was fine earlier in the night

What brands are good? Beachtec seems popular.
