I posted this same thread in another section of the DV Info forum, but I thought you Sony users might help:

I'm using a M10U deck to digitize my video into an AVID MC. Out of the blue, I'm getting info from the camera on the video: time of day and date the video was shot. It displays on the bottom of the video and it records to the AVID that way. Now I have day/date info on the bottom of all my digitized video!
I've gone through the deck's menu extensively and I can't get the deck to turn this feature off. I've tried different tapes, in both mini-DV and HDV, from a Z1 and an HVX200A and the date/day won't go away. I know you can record this info directly onto the video from the Z1, but that's not the case here. I've turned the deck on and off, to no avail.
Anyone encountered this before?

Go into the menu of the deck and scroll down to others and check to make sure display is on LCD.

I don't have this deck, but from reading the manual it appears that the only way to turn off data code completely is via the DATA CODE button on the remote. Page 27-28 of your manual.

Interesting, though: usually this only goes out via analog (component, composite, S-Vid). If you're capturing via FW the data shouldn't go into the PC, even though it displays on the screen. Maybe this changed in later models.

Obviously John beat me to the punch about how to clear text from coming out via analog, but I think this restricts the text display to the onboard monitor rather than eliminating it entirely, based on my reading.

I played some of my footage on a M10U at a local TV station and it did not show the data, so there must be a way to turn it off.

Yes!
It was the Data Code button on the remote. Many thanks to all of you and your insight.
