I recently purchased a Sony HDR-TG1, and there are a lot of files on the camera. To archive/backup files - can I just copy the .MTS files?

On an earlier post (AVCHD, iMovie, and big uncompressed video files - The Digital Video Information Network (http://www.dvinfo.net/conf/showthread.php?p=919455)), I was pointed at Voltaic, a utility for converting from AVCHD to AIC (for iMovie). Their web site seemed to imply that the MTS file was sufficient, but I'd prefer additional verification.
