Bill Edmunds August 17th, 2008, 05:39 PM Are you doing weddings? Commercials? Corporate work? Television work? How are you delivering your final product? Steve Lewis August 18th, 2008, 12:38 AM Are you doing weddings? Commercials? Corporate work? Television work? How are you delivering your final product? I am doing documentary work, little 2-5 minute "nature/eye-candy" shorts for fun and I plan on shooting a short narrative for a college class on the A1... unless the Scarlet comes out before! Jayson Corcoran August 18th, 2008, 03:56 AM I am using it for work mainly, filming cars at our workshops. I have to admit, its a lot harder than I ever imagined. Phil Kay August 18th, 2008, 04:55 AM For business I do mainly 'adult' films for the internet. I won't post a link ;0) For pleasure I make a lot of outdoor action films(kayaking, surfing, climbing, etc) YouTube - Surfing Isle of Man (mainly Peel and Gansey) (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=yaAC48myZM4) Douglas Thigpen August 18th, 2008, 05:27 AM Man on the street interviews at night and documentary work. Benjamin Hill August 18th, 2008, 05:38 AM Dance videography, web videos, TV spots, marketing videos and television documentaries. Delivering in any number of web formats as well as DVD, BetaSP and HDCAM depending on the needs of a project. Jonathan Shaw August 18th, 2008, 05:58 AM Shooting underwater, selling stock, making DVD's... Lovin life, lovin the A1. Ryan Postel August 18th, 2008, 07:34 AM Corporate marketing and training videos. Guy Shaddock August 18th, 2008, 08:54 AM I do corporate brochures, training video's and weddings. I have to agree with one of the previous posters... compared to other cameras I am amazed at how much more complex it is to shoot with the A1. Not because of the camera per se but just shooting HD in general. Life was much simpler, easier with my trusty old Panasonic DVC 80 (the 100B without 24p). I still us SD for my profit making work since most of my products either end up on the web or DVD. HD is far more demanding in every way ....shooting, editing, lighting etc. I believe the A1 answers to all of those with it's multitude of controls. I've spent a lot of time learning HD and I suspect it will take a lot more time practising and problem solving. To use a metaphor the difference between SD and HD it is like flying a Piper Cub or flying a jet.... Eric Weiss August 18th, 2008, 09:37 AM Broadcast and DVD, mostly travel related. David Beisner August 18th, 2008, 10:47 AM Promotional shorts, documentary pieces, and tutorial stuff for a private college. Delivery is primarily web with some DVD and potentially some Blu-Ray in the future for our extra special potential donors. Bill Pryor August 18th, 2008, 11:01 AM Documentary...corporate...training and motivational...industrial...technical...all the things I used to do with 2/3" chip Betacam SP and DVCAM cameras. Delivery is DVD and web, some tape (SD) for festivals. I shoot everything 24F, capture and edit in FCP HDV1080P24 settings, export as HDV1080P24 QT, then downconvert in Compressor. Robert Morane August 18th, 2008, 11:17 AM Corporate and educational videos, documenary work for internet. I shoot 30f and edit FCE. Nicholas de Kock August 18th, 2008, 05:49 PM Weddings, Events, and what ever else pays :P Tripp Woelfel August 18th, 2008, 06:30 PM I shoot motor races and support pieces around the races. Also do some local commercials and the odd wedding when my arm is twisted hard enough. I learned the camera by shooting all over the White Mountains last winter so I guess I shoot nature too. Denise Wall August 18th, 2008, 07:12 PM Specialty training and informational videos. Love HD. Previously had a Sony PD 150. Lee Small August 18th, 2008, 07:20 PM ...I learned the camera by shooting all over the White Mountains last winter so I guess I shoot nature too. Lucky. I visited the White Mountains in early June this year trying to film the Bristlecone Pines in the Schulman Grove. I did manage to get some interesting film using my HV30, but it started to snow...and snow...and snow! I think it dumped about 6-inches of snow in an hour - all above 9,000 feet. It was certainly beautiful, but I hadn't really planned on handling that much snow. So...I missed my opportunity and will have to try again next year. Steve Lewis August 18th, 2008, 08:28 PM For business I do mainly 'adult' films for the internet. I won't post a link ;0) [/url] Your kidding. ? J.J. Kim August 18th, 2008, 09:56 PM I just started my own poduction in suburb chicago. pretty much anything from wedding, events, coporate (have not done any on my own yet), education, and non-profit. I am thinking about getting H1a later when I make more money, but loving my A1 except no focus/zoom at the same time function. Steve Wolla August 18th, 2008, 11:21 PM Mostly a medical show for cable TV....but also some sports work, and stuff for my church. Bill Edmunds August 19th, 2008, 05:48 AM I shoot motor races and support pieces around the races. Also do some local commercials and the odd wedding when my arm is twisted hard enough. I learned the camera by shooting all over the White Mountains last winter so I guess I shoot nature too. Hey Tripp, we should get together. Take a look at where I'm from. Erick Munari August 19th, 2008, 06:58 AM I have done a fashion show, two weddings, two art studios documentations, a small documentary on a clothing company in Bali and a lot of random things that I see that capture my eye and seem to have some hidden relevance. I'd like to do film some day. Here is a link: YouTube - celestina646's Channel (http://www.youtube.com/profile?user=celestina646) I intend to work with this camera on the standards: Weddings, corporate, performances and whatever pays. The equipment needs to pay for itself and someday pay for my living. Ernest Sams August 19th, 2008, 07:27 AM Currently shooting a fun HDV1080P24 project on the behavior of wild birds I feed and let bathe on my porch. Shoots weddings, funerals and soon documentaries. Mark Fry August 19th, 2008, 09:07 AM I shoot steam trains, mainly for my own amusement. I make DVDs and sell them in aid of the railway preservation societies that I belong to. I shoot, edit (using Avid Liquid) and archive back to camera tapes in HDV 50i. I down-convert to SD MPEG for the DVDs using AL at the very end of the process. I've also posted a view clips on YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/user/SteamAgePictures). I always work outdoors, by myself, using available light. Each shot has to work on the first take. Rehearsals and retakes are impossible. Pans and/or zooms are normal. Audio is normally a Rode NTG-1 short shotgun mounted on camera. Having moved up from an XL1, I find the XH-A1 quite easy to use, though it's rather bigger and heavier. I've tried using manual modes but have found that auto is usually perfectly reliable, so unless there's a particular problem to overcome, I leave the camera to worry about exposure and focus while I concentrate on following the action. Luke Ross August 19th, 2008, 09:42 AM Shooting underwater, selling stock, making DVD's... Does anyone else sell stock. Is it profitable? I have ran across sites that you can sell stock on, but wasn't sure if it was worth the time. Considering starting a new thread to discuss best sites to sell your stock on.. Annie Haycock August 19th, 2008, 11:37 AM Yes, I sell stock, but don't expect to make a fortune. Treat it as a sideline - at present I don't have time to work on bigger projects. Jonathan Shaw August 19th, 2008, 03:50 PM I am the same as Annie, definitely a sideline. But I use a site that allows me to still use the footage for other projects, it just generates some money from footage that just sits on my hard drive. But you are correct that it takes time to upload and mess about. Tripp Woelfel August 19th, 2008, 06:44 PM Lucky. It was a record winter for snow and a record summer for rain. Hopefully next time you're here there won't be so much moisture falling. David Thanh August 19th, 2008, 07:01 PM I've just finished shooting footage for my first documentary short. I am getting into adventure filmmaking. Anyone joining me in Peru at adventure film school? Brian Seguin August 21st, 2008, 07:49 PM I shoot "subject matter experts" who wish to sell their own instructional DVD's. The last one I made was entitled "Sculpting A Bust". This artist took a block of clay and demonstrated how to create a human head and upper torso, all in 55 min... She will sell them for $35.00 each. I'm trying this business model: I shoot/edit create DVD - no cost. Client pays direct cost of any background music, etc. and then actual cost of production of copies. Then split profit 50/50 for pre-determined quantity of sales. Of course this model only works, if the item will sell! Edwin Vervuurt August 22nd, 2008, 01:56 AM I do mostly sports video for Queen's University including an end of the year sports banquet video, a weekly sports TV show, sports training videos, and an occasional national commercial. I also do weddings, real estate videos, and some miscellaneous events. Looking into doing some stock video shortly. I got some great footage in Australia and Tasmania recently which they seemed keen to have a look at. Geoffrey Cox August 22nd, 2008, 04:40 AM My background is really in music / sound design for creative / artistic documentary shorts. Current, on-going project contrasts urban and rural environments and will use live piano as well as on-screen sound and music. Love montage and creative editing rather than conventional continuity / narrativity. John Estcourt August 22nd, 2008, 05:08 AM dance shows, school plays, weddings, birthdays and ice skating competitions. the vx2100 officially retired. hopefully some corporate coming up very soon ! Vasco Laurence Scott August 27th, 2008, 06:47 AM Primary use for my XH A1 will be wedding capture but I'm looking to branch out into corporate & manufacturing training and events, real estate [when it rebounds] and eventually promotional works with local artists and musicians. Patrick Megenty August 29th, 2008, 11:35 PM HD Nudist Documentary videos in Eastern Europe! With a modified version of the VividRGB preset, the resulting video quality is STUNNING. Thanks to everyone on this forum, it has been an invaluable resource of information. Alessandro Nucci September 2nd, 2008, 09:27 AM Delivering in any number of web formats as well as DVD, BetaSP and HDCAM depending on the needs of a project. Hi, I'm wondering if the clients in need of the HDCAM format knows you filmed in HDV. Is the XH-A1 quality good enough to compare with HDCAM? Alessandro Gert Kracht September 2nd, 2008, 09:39 AM It's 100% hobby right now. Making custom preset movies: V1.0: Canon XH-A1 Custom Preset Movie on Vimeo (http://www.vimeo.com/846830) V2.1: Canon XH-A1 CUSTOM PRESET Movie V2.1 on Vimeo (http://www.vimeo.com/1650059) V2.2: CANON XH-A1 PRESET MOVIE V2.2: 'SKINTONES' on Vimeo (http://www.vimeo.com/1641757) Made some sing along clips for kids: Bella, Berk en Buur - Hap hap smikkelsmak on Vimeo (http://www.vimeo.com/1215754) And we made a multicam video of a CD presentation in Amsterdam: DERICK - Laat me on Vimeo (http://www.vimeo.com/1142082) (Crappy sound, thanks to the sound engineer who had a bad day....) And the last few months we (me and a few other A1'ers) made lots of video material about places, activities and people on the Dutch coast. Those video's will be put online on a new website in 2009. David Gibson September 2nd, 2008, 03:47 PM I'm doing some work for the local newspaper for their video website. Shooting various historical/documentary/interview type material for a texana website. Shots for the local newspaper website. Fredrik-Larsson September 3rd, 2008, 11:49 AM Well, since nobody mentioned a movie I might as well mention that I am making a feature movie with it. There is a very, very short clip from it at my blog at The Russian Captain (http://trc-movie.blogspot.com/) but we managed to get some more really nice shots out of it and I will publish more in the future. We are shooting until june 2009 so it's a slow progress. Anyway, I love the camera and I am using a film stock preset that makes it looks really nice. Will Mahoney September 3rd, 2008, 01:25 PM I'm a full-time Copywriter and part-time Videographer for a few big aftermarket auto accessory retailers. I mostly shoot vehicle event coverage (car/truck shows) and product installation and information videos. But that's just what I get paid to do. What I WANT to do is creative stuff - wildlife, documentaries, short films - I can't wait! Mark Fry September 4th, 2008, 08:26 AM Well, since nobody mentioned a movie I might as well mention that I am making a feature movie with it. Looks interesting. Are you using one of the presets posted on this forum (in which case, which one?) or have you made one specially? If it's your own, would you share it with us, please, and maybe explain what the settings do for the "look" of the picture? If not now, then maybe when your movie is finished? Thanks in advance. Fredrik-Larsson September 4th, 2008, 08:47 AM I am using the PRESET04.CPF "5248FILM". I went through all presets and also without preset and I just felt that this is the one that fits the movie. We are shooting 25p and were possible we try to make that shallow depth of field look so it's more movielike. The preset makes the move look like "not like video" which is my primary concern. I have some really nice clips of the sunrise, pictures in the forest et.c so I feel very happy about getting this camera. Hopefully with creative editing, sound fx, music, audio it can be a really good movie but I don't know if it is until the end of next summer.. :) Brian David Melnyk September 4th, 2008, 09:40 AM i'm in Africa (Burundi based) shooting small docs showcasing the work of NGO's who have programs reintegrating ex-combatants, promoting women's empowerment (ie: rape is not even illegal in Burundi!!!!!) and more... very interesting and challenging, especially with the translation factor. i will be shooting videos for songs from my CD and for two new songs i am just releasing while on my Canadian vacation. i love the XH-A1 and am dreaming of the day i can include blu-ray in my FCP workflow. and toggle the IS without a menu... and drink coffee from the battery compartment... Richard Gooderick September 4th, 2008, 09:55 AM Have recently made 5 x 5' music documentaries and some corporate films. Link below if you want to see them. |
