View Full Version : transcoding to mpeg2 or avi from camera

I want to know if the hf-10/11/100 has an option to download the avchd files to the PC with the camera acting as a transcoder/converter from avchd to an mpeg2 or avi/DV on the fly. I know the avchd is of much higher quality, but my core 2 duo (2ghz) notebook may not be good enough for editing with vegas. I don't mind the image hit for some type of work, so this is ok. But I don't want the extra time needed to convert from avchd to mpeg2 or DV using vegas, w/c will add time. Maybe the camera, because it already has the codec in hardware can do this on the fly?

TIA!

It does not have that option.

Hi Mel,

Rich is right. It doesn't transcode, but TMPGEnc 4.0 Xpress's latest version does, and it does it well, too.

You can gang process a chip's worth of files to standard HDV if that is what you want, or you can process the 1920x1080 to 1920x1080 9-bit MPEG2 files that you can edit at great quality, too.

Either way, you win. I don't think there's much of a quality hit either. Let the computer process the files over night, once you get your settings the way you want them.

My best.
