In terms of recording format, don't we have the same editing issues with EX as HDV? Maybe HDV is tape based and EX is solid state but they both use Mpeg 2 Long GOP.

I don't know.
Maybe the higher bitrate helps somewhat?
EX owners speak up!

Both are long gop MPEG2, but the similarities end there. The EX and it's larger siblings in the XDCAM HD line record uncompressed audio. Higher bit rate greatly reduces compression artifacts. These newer generation MPEG2 encoders are able to do a wonderful job with the space they have to work in.

NLE systems are much more capable of editing HDV and XDCAM than they would have been a few years back.

The EX family is also recording a full raster 1920 x1080 image as that is the native resolution of their imagers.

Couple of additional questions:

can FCP handle EX without a capture card setup much like HDV?
Do u capture the clips with a firewire transfer? or can u just use USB?
What is the file size in GB/minute?
What is the bit rate? If HDV is 25mb/sec

thx

Yes.

You can do HDV over firewire. You do XDCam EX onto the SxS cards. You do neither over USB.

What is the file size in GB/minute?

An 8GB card hods 35 minutes of HDV and 25 minutes of XDCam EX

XDCam EX is 35 Mbps.

Additionally, the camera will do HD-SDI (uncompressed HD) at 1.5Gbps 4:2:2, but you need your own recording solution. There are several available.
