I used to transfer 60i footage back to tape all the time, but recently I've done some work on a project in Canon's 24f format. I captured it using a custom 23.98 non-drop frame device control in FCP which works great. I then edit everything in a 23.98 sequence.

So, I go to print to tape and wait seemingly forever for the HDV to conform, then start the transfer. The transfer will go about 20 minutes, then the camera starts cutting out. I tried sending over to the HV20 first, then the A1. I swapped cables, rebooted multiple times, played with the drop and non-drop settings on the camera, and still no luck.

The worst part is the first 20 minutes of footage that appeared to copy successfully studders when played back. It's very bad, to the point of uselessness. It's like watching a badly scratched DVD. The playback will stop for 2-3 seconds at a time, then catch back up and start working for another minute or two, and skip again.

I've tried head cleaners, different camera, cables, tapes. I'm out of ideas. Is this even possible? I've done some research on the net but can't seem to find anything. I can't really tell if this is a camera setting or FCP setting mismatch or both. Surely its not a hardware problem?

I don't want to go back to 60i from my 24f... the pullup or whatever its referred to looks really bad. My quick solution was to transfer the project to Apple TV, but I lost a lot of resolution. I'd really like to go back to tape and keep the full resolution and also keep the 23.98 framerate. Any ideas?

Nick,
I'm having the EXACT same problem with little luck finding an answer. Did you ever resolve this? It's driving me nuts.

Jessica,

Never did... got fed up with it.

The only solution I found was to convert to 60i then print back to tape, but then you get the duplicated frames and it just looks really bad.

I bought an Apple TV and use it to display my 24f material. Works like a champ, even though its not full 1080, it still looks pretty good. Works for what I needed.
