The minimal instructions say push it in the direction you want while connecting it but this doesn't do anything. I've tried connecting it whilst the Z1 is on and pushing the zoom but nothing. I've tried doing it whilst turning the camera on and nothing. (To qualify this the camera DOES automatically zoom in the direction I want it to go after doing both of the above, but it then just returns back to the previous setting.)

I have succesfully done it before but for some reason nothing now.

Did you remember to switch the Zoom switch on the camera barell.
I have to switch the Zoom control on the front of my FX1 (Same as Z1) to eitehr use the Zoom ring or Zoom on the handle. The zoom on the handle is what works with LANC remotes.

I think there's a bit of confusion. It does zoom, and works fine. I just want to try out the zoom in different directions. I don't feel comfortable with the current setting.

OK. i think i found it. you have to push the focus button while turning the lanc on.
