Hey there,
A friend gave me some footage he shot with a HDD Camcorder. He gave them to me in .mpg format. It plays fine in quicktime but when i bring it into FCP i loose the audio altogether.

I have little to no experience with HDD camcorders as everything i do is with miniDV so forgive my ignorance for this whole thing.
Thanks!

There are several solutions to this problem, one of them is to use MPEG Streamclip (http://www.squared5.com/) to extract the audio tracks from the MPEG file. Import this audio into Final Cut Pro and all will be rosy.

The problem is silly Final Cut Pro does not know how to read MPEG encoded audio, which is ironic, considering QuickTime knows how to do it and Final Cut is is based on QuickTime. Depending on your workflow, you might want to convert the MPEG file to a DV file using one of several conversion applications out there like Episode. But MPEG Streamclip is free, so it's a compelling option. More details on converting MPEG files here: http://www.sjoki.uta.fi/%7Eshmhav/SVCD_on_a_Macintosh.html#edit_convert_MPEG
