I would like to use a field recorder for my wildlife filmmaking. I am going to use the Sony EX3 but I would like to record on a separate device. Which recorder is excellent in the price range of 1-2 grand. What do I have to keep in mind when choosing. I am going to use the Senhiser 416 with it.
I heard the Tascam P-2 is a good option - what do you think? I realise it is in the market for nearly three years now.
Any input and advice would be greatly appreciated!

In addition to the Tascam there's the Fostex FR-2, Edirol R-4 and R-4Pro, Sound Devices 702. I personally am a fan of SD.

You might want to take a look at the Sound Devices SD702. It's rugged, has excellent low-noise mic pre amps, & limiters, and plays nicely with other similar gear (SD302, for example).
I have one and love it.

SD 702

When I scoured the internet for sound recorder reviews, for most of them there were good points and bad. For the SD 702, the only downside was the price. It sounded audbily better on all the soundclips that were posted, and no-one who had bought one regretted it.

I now have one. My only regret is not buying it sooner. I have used it to record classical music, with Schoeps microphones, at 24 bit, 96k and the sound is better than commercial CDs. It remains in sych with the video without needing timecode, for at least 40 minutes.

Apart from the sound quality, its controls, and functionality are wonderful.

And top quality sound equipment does not become obsolete the way video equipment does.

Another vote for the SD 702

Dear Ofer,

I also vote for the SD recorders.

Be certain to get the one that you want.

The models are not upgradable from one to another in the "7xx" series.

The Tascam HD P2 is a good sounding lower cost alternative that has timecode in. I wanted the SD myself, but used the $1500 price difference on obtaining other gizmos.
