Is there some search engine advantage or site promotion benefit in uploading videos to sites like Vimeo and Utube. Does quality matter very much if the underlying reason for posting movies is the promotion of one's own site? I realize this may be a little off topic for this site but what are the search engine advantages of uploading to these big public sites. All of them seem to allow you to insert a hot link back to your own site...I wonder how long this will last :(

Well for a while I had the MOST viewed wedding blooper on YouTube (see image for traffic chart). But I didn't get any sales from it or any referrals. It just helps to have another organic site link back to my domain (I think).

However, there is some benefit to being an early adopter. You help the site build momentum, and you get to work out all the bugs in their specific codec early on. If Vimeo takes off as a showcase for wedding cinematography (or whatever your business may be) then that can only raise the awareness in the public for our services, which I think is a very good thing.
