Okay, sorry for the newbie question. I got the EX1 and will be going to Norway this weekend.

I have 2 16gb cards, and the memory card reader, and a Macbook Pro/external hard drive to dump cards onto. I will be shooting out in the middle of nowhere and didn't realize that
this memory card reader has to be plugged in??

How can I dump my cards in the woods if I cannot turn the reader on?

Am I missing something?

Use the Express card slot on the Macbook Pro and forget about the card reader...Express card slot is faster anyway.. You just need the SxS driver which is on the Sony Site.

I'm a goofball, I meant to say I have a Powerbook g4, which has no express card slot.

Time to upgrade...Sorry wish I had a better answer....You will love the Macbook Pro/EX1/ SxS workflow. I decided not to go with the USB reader for this very reason. 200+ and it needs seperate pwr... I think you can get a Dell Laptop with Express card slot for offloading for like 599.00 when they have there deals and it has storage too.

strange enough DELL's express card slot does not read sony SxS cards, it can read slower 34 cards, but not from EX1, I had to return XPS back to the store. got myself a great excuse to get a new vaio;

Another solution that I have used is to power the Sony SxS reader with a 12v battery.

This is what I have used.

Mac 17" G4

Sony SxS reader SBAC-US10

Antonbauer 14 ProPac Battery with Goldmount belt pack.

EXDC1 Power Cable 4-pin XLR to Sony Power connector from http://www.vortexmedia.com/EXDC1/EXDC1_Adapter_Cable/EXDC1.html

Works great and allowed us to use batteries we already owned.

The only reason to use the card reader would be on a desktop machine or if you are using the Express34 slot for eSata controller.
