View Full Version : V1U and Z1U Jason Boyette May 28th, 2008, 04:45 PM I have a wedding with only these two cameras. Anybody got any good suggestions of the best way to mix these different cameras? Greg Laves May 28th, 2008, 08:22 PM I haven't shot a wedding with a V1 and a Z1 but I did shoot an industrial job with them and they inter cut very easily. It was almost impossible to tell the footage apart but we did take a lot of time setting them up to match before we ever rolled tape. The Z1 will probably have a very slight advantage under low light conditions, from what I understand. All of our shooting was outdoors. Hugh Mobley May 28th, 2008, 08:52 PM We mix them all of the time, you might see a little difference in maybe some reds, V1 has more latitude than the Z1, overall mixing not a problem, what I would do is run a few tests on matching a picture profle in each and use those settings so they are closer without any post correction. Jason Boyette May 29th, 2008, 06:01 AM Thanks for the help, too bad I'll only have the camera a couple of hours before (one day I'll be able to afford 2 cameras) I'll let you know how it goes! Jason Boyette May 30th, 2008, 11:45 AM So after coming back from the camera store my Z1U turned into an FX1...I haven't read up on this one yet. Anybody got any suggestions in mixing my 2 cameras...V1U and FX1 Tom Hardwick May 30th, 2008, 12:10 PM You sure you're happy with the FX1 over the Z1? I have both and would never pick up the FX1 if the Z1 was within 100 yds. I can't live without the black stretch, focus assist, numerical zoom readout, WB fine tune and XLRs. tom. Jason Boyette May 30th, 2008, 12:21 PM not happy...it was the only one left Greg Laves May 30th, 2008, 08:43 PM I think the V1 will have a more tuneable set up. So it might be best to get the best picture/WB settings that you can with the FX1 and then try to fine tune the V1 to match it. Chris Medico June 2nd, 2008, 12:08 PM Hey Jason, How did the wedding shoot go? Let us know how the V1 and the FX1 compare when you have time. Chris Jason Boyette June 6th, 2008, 08:14 AM Sorry for the delay...it's exam week here at school The FX1 destroyed the V1U in the low light reception. After the important dances I put the V1U up and just used the FX1. (maybe next wedding I'll have proper lighting) As for the wedding both cameras worked great, I'm just gonna have to tweek the colors a little bit to match up better. I wish I had more time to set the 2 up before the wedding. Blake Cavett July 22nd, 2008, 01:30 PM How does the V1 compare against the Z1? I am considering selling one of my Z1's for a V1u. Justin Zimmerman July 22nd, 2008, 01:34 PM I used them both when I shot for this show... Watch in high quality and ask away... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZA78jyb_NyY http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rTEh-O4h-b8 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5tYNI30vKWI Jason Boyette July 22nd, 2008, 01:47 PM Ahh your youtube videos look a lot better than mine... Mind if I ask how you export (which NLE you use) and how you compress for youtube I love the V1U...but haven't mastered everything about it Justin Zimmerman July 22nd, 2008, 02:06 PM not at all. i use this format BUT recently it hasn't upscaled to High Quality unless i do a 1920 x 1080 export: http://www.kenstone.net/fcp_homepage/you_tube_redux_gary.html Jason Boyette July 22nd, 2008, 02:13 PM Awesome thanks...I'm in the right ballpark, just a little tweaking! Justin Zimmerman July 22nd, 2008, 03:06 PM How does the V1 compare against the Z1? I am considering selling one of my Z1's for a V1u. VERY different image. Justin Zimmerman July 22nd, 2008, 03:11 PM Jason, see also Vu1 / NLE thread below. Blake Cavett July 23rd, 2008, 04:23 AM VERY different image. Egads! Define 'VERY.' Justin Zimmerman July 23rd, 2008, 09:29 AM well, check out the links to the YouTube pilot i shot - the Lance Profile Show. watch everything LPS related on my youtube site in High Quality. you should be able to tell the difference. also look at the CEF projects on the site as well - they were shot using a VU1 in 3 cities in North America. www.youtube.com/zimfilm the VU1 is lighter and uses less battery power. it has the option of many progressive modes with pulldown but your NLE is very important for that equation too. the CMOS chips produce a crisp image but i keep my sharpness set at 3 (!) due to field tests and clipping. some people have complained about noise on this page - i think of it as a general coarseness of the image - almost impossible to explain but easy to see in the progressive modes. it has a side mounted LCD screen. turn macro off or it will kill you. there are numerous picture profile settings that will come in handy. in general it's a great little camera but depending on your needs and NLE, i would think twice before taking the $ hit. Tom Hardwick July 23rd, 2008, 09:35 AM i would think twice before taking the $ hit. So would I. Generally people progress to bigger chips, not smaller ones. Justin Zimmerman July 23rd, 2008, 10:01 AM well, the camera does have a unique image quality and post specs. it certainly has its uses if you are using it for a specific look and post pipeline. Greg Laves July 24th, 2008, 07:20 PM How does the V1 compare against the Z1? I am considering selling one of my Z1's for a V1u. I have V1 and I really like it but I think I would have a hard time justifying the extra expense of selling a Z1 and buying a V1. I think the V1 has some advantages, but I doubt it would be worth the money for you. Save it for the next "latest/greatest" to come down the road. Thanks for the advice (and sorry for the delayed response!) Jon Shohet August 2nd, 2008, 03:10 PM I would actually like to ask the reverse question : would any of you here that have shot with both cameras consider selling the v1 and buying the z1? I have been shooting with the v1 now for several months, and comparing to the PD170 I have been shooting with before - while I appreciate the v1 in many ways - I have always felt that there's something lacking in the v1's picture, in terms of "crispness". I'm guessing it's probably the smaller chips, but I do not have a z1 to compare to. I do love the progressive mode very much, but I still value image quality over it. Z7 and EX1 are a bit too expensive for us right now. So, any logic to change to a Z1? thanks Greg Laves August 2nd, 2008, 10:07 PM I would actually like to ask the reverse question : would any of you here that have shot with both cameras consider selling the v1 and buying the z1? Z7 and EX1 are a bit too expensive for us right now. So, any logic to change to a Z1? thanks I can't see going to the Z1 unless much of your work is shot under low light conditions. I have only used a Z1 when there has been plenty of light but it is my understanding that it is slightly better than the V1 in that respect. The PD170/VX2100 cameras amaze me under low light and they do a great job on SD but almost everything I have shot on my V1 blows the PD170 away as for "crispness". The only issue I could see is that shooting in HDV places a lot higher demand of proper focus than shooting in SD. If your focus is soft in HD, you are going to see it. Jon Shohet August 3rd, 2008, 03:15 AM So from your experience, under good lighting there is no advantage to the z1's bigger sensors in terms of image quality? I have more or less learned to live with the v1's so-so low light capability, I would probably not switch cameras solely on that account. thanks. |
