How would you hook up the HV30 to use it as a web cam? Would that be possible? Or would it be better just to buy a dedicated Web cam?

Just set your DV output on the camera to 'DV Lock' and plug it into your computer using a FireWire (IEEE 1394) cable and select it as an input. I've used my HV20 in Skype, iChat, and web based flash webcam apps.
