This has racked my brain for hours, but I can't seem to come to any sort of conclusion. I really need some insight on it...
To start, I capture from the Canon HV20 at 23.98 fps (the video was shot on an A1), using the 1080p24 setting on my sequence (also set to 23.98 fps). So I export the sequence as a quicktime movie... everything is good. I can open that quicktime movie in quicktime, view properties and it correctly shows 23.98 fps (attachment 24p04.jpg)
So, I drag my video into compressor, making sure the mpeg2 option is 23.98 fps, also note the source video is showing 23.98 fps. (attachment 24p06.jpg)
I let the file compress.... everything is still great... so I open the m2v file in quicktime and check the frame rate, now it's 29.97?? why is that? Also, I import the same m2v into dvd studio pro and it also shows 29.97. What gives? (attachments 24p07.jpg and 24p03.jpg)
I also opened the video in VLC, which also shows 29.97. (attachment 24p09.jpg)
So as a last resort I tried MPEG Streamclip... it shows 23.98! (attachment 24p10.jpg) Obviously 23.98 is getting encoded in the file somewhere, but why is quicktime and even DVD studio pro simply ignoring the option? In the DVD Studio Manual, on page 49 it clearly states "You can confirm they are actually 24 fps by selecting them in the Assets tab and verifying the frame rate in the Asset inspector". Well, the Asset inspector shows 29.97!
Is my DVD even capable of playing back a 24fps without the pulldown?
I tried answering that myself by going ahead and burning the DVD. Once it finished, I opened the VOB files with the exact same results. VLC shows 29.97 and MPEG Streamclip showed 23.98.
Any ideas??? I'm completely lost on this one
