im mostly into visual effects, cg with live footage. if all goes by plans im going to holland to film with some guys i know in athum vacation.

Hi Kate...it's nice to see a fellow New Jerseyan (ite?). You may be the first woman I've run across on the boards. I really hope women will embrace technology in higher percentages and put an end to the boys club. Diversity is the only thing that drives and expands any art-based medium.

Oh dear - I'm 73 and took up video on Wednesday , well I wanted a new hobby and Sky Diving would be pushing my luck a little.

That's the cool thing about video. You just sit there and edit. Of course, one does need to go out once in while and shoot, but that's good too.

I'm one of those 19 year old college kids with a camera. Vive la vie boheme!

55 and still love to get out and video. Started with an old 8mm movie camera I picked up in SEA (Southeast Asia) back in 1969. Jez, that before most of you were born. Anyway, moved up to Super 8mm movie camera, then a Nikon 8mm video, a Sony Hi-8, the XL-1 and now the XL-1s. I will probably go XL-2 in Jan 2006.

I just turned 38 last month. Going on my 15th year in the business.

Congratulations to you as well. So far it's not that bad of an age.

43 here (although one of my doctors says my not so good ticker adds 20-30yrs to my total - sigh, what do they know?). About a year ago I was asked to video my stepson's wedding... borrowed a Digital 8 Sony... 12 months later and a ton of $$ invested, well here I am :)

Canon Optura 20, cheapo Panny (deck use) and a dvc80 at the moment. Editing in FCP on a dual 2.0 G5.

Will be 52 this coming Tuesday. Surprised I've lasted this long, given the lifestyle :) Been in entertainment most of my life, on both sides of the camera. The XL1s is the first one I've ever owned, as opposed to using my employers gear. LOVE this forum.

Looks like I get one of the winning ticket's for the high side. I'm 64, and still climbing these mountains up here. I guess that's what keeps me acting like a mere 30 year old.

My hat's off to you, Robert. I can only hope that I am able...and willing...to climb anything taller than a footstool 14 years from now.

38 and learning to surf

51.5 years old. Starting shooting news video in its infancy back in 1976. Started a corporate video operation in '79 and lost that position in a '01 merger. Started my own video communications business which has been a struggle. Now, searching for a full-time corporate video or communications postion...that, too, has been a struggle.

For all these years, video is what keeps me young. It's the ultimate blend of technology and story telling.

I want to keep the average up so I'll concede that I turned 44 this past July.

So Ken, what's the latest on stats?

Well thanks to several recent members senior to me our reported stats are creeping up just a bit. With 155 members reporting to-date:

Average age: 35.79
Median age: 34
Standard Deviation: 14.21

58 last month. Make my living as a public school teacher. Got into teaching late in life. Video tape weddings, graduations and recitals for family and friends. Own 2-panasonic gs70's. Looking seriously at moving up to a larger chip camera. Considering some of the newer 16X9 cams. So many to choose from and so little money.
Glad to be here and (as a rank amateur) I appreciate all the advice and help I've received from a number of you.

I'm 50. I was in the TV news biz for 30 years until it got so bizarre and stupid I started my own production company (me) last year. Since then, I've produced a lot of stuff, had a lot of fun and love every minute of it (except when my computer blows a power supply like the other day). I figure I'll do this until I die.

30, Hope that I am not too late to make a trilogy.

22 years in the TV industry, 2 years working for myself. I'll never go back.

Phil: I'm glad I got out of American TV when I did. The revenue streams are all drying up and most of the money's flowing to cable, satellite and rental. A lot of my friends and former employees are being laid off after struggling their entire lives just to eake out a living. It's not pretty and what's on the air on commercial American TV is worse. I understand Australian TV was viciously competitive. Whenever I ran into Ch. 9 or 7 (I believe that's right) news crews, they made Americans look like school kids.

Yes there has been a lot of centralisation going on in Australian TV over the last few years. My colleges and I were all made redundant. (It's hard to get another career at 45) There is not many jobs available outside of Sydney and Melbourne (east coast) There is the big 3 her in Aust TV, channels 7.9 &10. Money is pretty tight so they fight tooth & nail for ratings etc. A lot of what is on tv here is American shows the same stuff that you guys watch. I worked for CH7, had a lot of great opportunities while I was there, covered 2 olympic games etc etc, but it's good to work for yourself and not have to answer to anybody else, come and go as you please. You know the sort of thing I mean.

With the proliferation of bloggers in America, a lot of expert are wondering if mainstream journalism's days are numbered. Certainly, TV news is suffering greatly at all levels. Salaries are terrible, morale is awful and most stations are now owned by a few huge conglomerates (your countryman Rupert Murdoch is among them) which means layoffs, homogeneous programming and plummeting ratings.
But it's a tremendous opportunity for little guys. Independent film makers are everywhere, documentaries are not only popular- they're setting the issue agenda i.e. Fahrenheit 911, Supersize Me. It's a golden age for documentary and I'm having a gas!
