There are some exciting new things from Avid on the software and the hardware side. The product line was simplified by killing Xpress Pro and there are 2 new hardware boxes that promise to deliver great speed and reliability in the edit bay.

And there is a price point for every budget. News from pre-NAB announcement:

I don't think they've released pricing yet.

IMO , it would make sense that Mojo DX has HD I/O of some sort.

In the article linked by Igor above:

"Media Composer running on Mojo DX or Mojo SDI hardware is intended for offline capture and editing. The Mojos lack some of the real time features of Nitris DX.

Mojo DX comes with SD and HD SDI as well as analog and HDMI connectivity. Mojo SDI works in standard definition only."

It would indeed make sense, David, I agree. I think in today's world, it would be nuts to release hardware that has no HD compatibility.

I was trying to figure out the price points last night. I don't think that even the resellers know that just now. But it seems that Mojo DX will be listed for either 4K or 5K. This is all anecdotal so don't base any decisions on it.

Any word on if Avid will continue its DS Assist Station software? It's a software only version of DS. Thanks.

I haven't heard anything about discontinuing DS Assist Station. Certainly not at the L.A. event. In fact, very little was said about DS in general.

Stereoscopic editing from 2d images with 3D output in development.

That would be impressive if they pull that off!!

Not sure but I overheard one guy talking to a demo artist about that and he seemed pleased with what he heard. There should be overall improvements in native HD handling.

Over on the EX1 forum there is a thread mentioning the possibility of a customer patch release to allow 35 mbit 1920x1080 editing of HQ

Thanks David.
Unfortunately for me, it seems like this update/patch, whatever it is, is for Avid on PCs only. I'm on a Mac, and I suspect I'm still out of luck.

A ton of new announcements on a ton of new features and pricing.

Among them FINALLY JVC HDV 24p and 25p EDITING. The bottom line is that now you can get real-time HD I/O for under $10k.

I was possibly wrong on the real-time HD part for under $10k. We'll have to see.

Media Composer v. 3 will be out around June and should work with everything HD under the sun including AVC-1. I was hoping the new Mojo DX would be cheaper and I'm not sure you can buy it unbundled from Media Composer software or not.

With the upcoming support for Vista 64-bit there's another question. Will this be native 64-bit app? And will how much ram and many cpu cores will MC actually support, one thing is to running it with 8 cores and 4-8gb ram, another is if there are any benefit at all.

In a post on the Avid forums (sorry, don't have the link at the moment) one of the moderators talked to one of the Avid developers and was told that MC will be a 32-bit app running in 64-bit space, like the majority of Vista-compatible apps at present. Even though it's still a 32-bit app, it will be able to use all the RAM that Vista can see. So on Vista 64, you'll be able to use more than 4GB of RAM. (Which means I need to add more RAM to my Avid workstation soon!)

As for how many cores it supports, I'm a network admin, not a programmer, but my understanding of how things work is that once an app is truly "multithreaded" it will be capable of using as many cores as are in a given system. It just spawns as many threads as the OS can process. So 2 cores, 4 cores, or 8 cores, it'll be able to use them.

There should definitely be considerable benefit. Even the current version of MC will get a slight benefit running on an 8 core XP box, since the OS can run some of its processes on the other cores while MC gets at least one core all to itself instead of sharing it with XP's housekeeping tasks.

Hope this helps. I'm sure someone will properly roast me if I've made ant major blunders.
