I was wondering what you all do for lighting during the wedding ceremony for a two or three camera setup? Do you use on camera lights or setup lights or no lights? If you do use lights which ones?

Thanks,

Bryan

Hi Bryan

It really all depends on how the place is lit before you get there. I use on camera lights when neccessary as they are much less of a pain to set up and use.

Bryan light during a ceremony is a no no in my book.
And as such I use only the available light present.

I have used a few small led lights under the top of a huppah for a Jewish ceremony a few times with good results. But that was use only to light the inside of the huppah for filming.

For reception use we use on camera lighting.

I use a Sony HVL-LBP LED camera light for my main camera. Excellent light, a bit on the big side, but is dimmable, has a great spread, has flip down diffuser and beam focuser, stays cool, no need for cables, and runs all day long on the Sony batteries.

We also use a NRG Varalux light for the stationary tripod at the reception. It's a great light, is dimmable, has good spread, is 100 watts, but really needs a bunch of power to run it all night long, so we have to use battery belts to run it.

We also have a PAG C6 on camera light that we use for on camera use if needed. It's a very good light as it stays pretty cool, but isn't dimmable only focusable and you can only run 30 watts max on it. The battery run times on it are pretty good though and the light itself is small.

We are probably going to pickup a few more HVL-LBP lights as we have been real happy with them to date.

There are lots of good lights out there (Vidled, Litepanels, Zylight, and more) and everyone will chime in I'm sure with their favorites.

We have been seriously considering the Zylight series of lights as they are fully dimmable with no color shift, no color gels needed as you can set them to any color of the spectrum, are daylight and tungsten switchable, and can even be synced together wirelessly (which is real cool). The only thing about them is they're expensive (I can get 2 Sony lights for the price of one Zylight) that you need to power them with an external battery source, which is the real reason that I love the Sony HVL-LBP light as there is no need for battery cabling.
Overall though I would say the Zylight is maybe the best LED light out there if you want t spend for it.
