Anyone have any suggestions for an affordable waveform monitor?
Also anyone know where to find some good articles about color balancing?

The cheapest portable waveform monitor I've seen was about $5000. If that's in your price range I'll try and look up the details.
Also, you'll find some articles on colour theory on this site:

Hope that helps,
Liam.

There a company called Compuvideo that has some small portible types that I think are in the 1500-2000 range.
also I seems to remeber a recent Panny ad for a 17 inch LCD fields monitor with built in waveform. that might be a more workable solution
edit: found it Panasonic BT-LH1700W

The ultra-portable waveform, vectorscope and HDV monitor would be HDVRAck software on your laptop, now bought by Adobe and called Adobe OnLocation could be an alternative.
