I tried using a $150 LCD 7" portable TV for help with focusing on a program yesterday. You probably know what happened. Terrible!!

B&H has:

Delvcam for around $270
Totevision for around $630-$700
Nebtek for around $450-$950
Marshall for thousands.....

Such a wide price range.... Do I have to pay $1,000- $2,000 to get a field monitor that will help with focus using my Canon GL2 cams ?

Well, I see that 275 forum members have taken a look at this......Huhhhhhhhhh? Maybe you are just being kind and not making a comment ?? :-)

Save yourself an awefull lot of blood, sweat, tears and cash and simply buy a decent LRF (Laser Range Finder) instead. Works a treat IF your camera has distance readout on screen/ in viewfinder.

If not, hmmm, guess it's back to big bickies.

Are you using a 35mm adapter or something? It seems to me with an SD camera shooting with the stock lens, focusing shouldn't be too much of a problem. Autofocus would probably do just fine.

Of course this totally depends on the application, which i am unaware of - so correct me if i'm wrong.

But i imagine any SD capable monitor from any of those brands you listed off would be fine. No need to spend more money on resolutions above your max native resolution unless you plan on upgrading to HD in the near future.

Problem is that when I use my GL2 cams in a low light stage performance, sometimes the auto focus wants to hunt and hunt and then set itself on some part of the scene other than what I'm trying to get. Light is so dim that I can't tell if focus is correct on the small cam LCD even when I use manual focus.

That makes sense, then. I suppose a good SD monitor would do you some good. Although for filming plays or performances like that you're probably in a chair or at least not moving around (tripod). So a cheap CRT tv or monitor might do the trick. No need in paying for portability if it's not a strict requirement.
