I'm looking for a way to mount a Bescor battery pack on the back of my XL2. I wonder if there's perhaps a simple bracket that could be used.

Peer,

Attach the attachment holder that came w/the camera (it screws on the back above the XLR inputs). Then you can velcro or strap the pack to the attachment holder. Maybe?

Rats -- I didn't get any "attachment holder" with my camera. Is it possible to buy those separately?

Yes it is. Call Canon parts (used to be 1-800-OKCANON). I guess you bought your camera second hand and didn't know.

Peer, shame you didn't get one with the camera. When you order, the accessory's number is D82-0780-000 (as per page 118 of the XL2 manual).

Na, I don't think that's it. The bracket that I've seen (pictures of) is just a mounting plate without any XLR's or charger. Not long ago, one guy in L.A. was selling it for $35 on Craigslist, but the ad (incl. the pic) has now expired so I don't know how to describe it.

Yeah, it is just a bracket plate...not the CH-910 battery holder. If you have the manual, look farther down on page 118 under "Provided Accessories". Or on page 8 there is a pic...it's the "Adapter Holder". I use it for my Anton Bauer GoldMount.

Yes indeed, that's the bracket I'm looking for. Earlier I called Canon, but they couldn't find it and I couldn't describe it clear enough... and most of their knowledgeable people were gone due to Presidents Day.

I also contacted the seller of the Camera and they (sort of) acknowledge that I never got this bracket.

So thank you again Jonathan, now I finally have a reference -- page 8 in the manual.

No prob. Hopefully the geniuses at Canon will be able to look in the manual tomorrow when they get back from work. SOME of us have to work today! ;)

So yesterday I finally got this bracket from Canon. It's pretty much what I wanted -- it now allows me to strap on the battery pack for my Bescor lights. Again, thanks Jonathan & et al.

However, I still wonder what those two smaller pieces that came with it are used for? Since they screw onto the bracket, I assume they can mount or snap on some contraption of sorts... no?

Peer,
yes, the two 'knob' attachements are there to hold the Dual Battery Charger ch-910 in place, it snaps onto it. Also, some battery packs will also utilize them.

Aha. So are there any generic mounts that will fit those "knob" attachments?

Not that I'm aware of, but the AB Gold Mount adapter mounts directly to the plate using 4 of the screw holes.

Hi Peer,

Glad you were able to get the bracket, and able to mount the Bescor battery. (We use said same bracket to mount the lav's wireless receiver.)

Just curious though, how "heavy" is that Bescor battery on the XL2?

Oh man, those batteries are heavy. I tried weighing it on my postal scale (which goes to 20 ounces) and the battery bottoms it out easily. I would guess that they weigh at least 2 pounds.

Yeah, so don't forget the adding a battery pack moves the center of gravity backwards, so you should slide your XL2 forward the same distance on your tripod. Otherwise, you run the risk of wearing the ball head unevenly.
