View Full Version : A Dynamic Wedding Clip Oleg Kalyan February 15th, 2008, 03:38 PM Please take a look at short wedding clip, edited to a non typical wedding music. Please share you thoughts! Oleg Kalyan February 15th, 2008, 03:39 PM Sorry forgot to post the link http://olegkalyan.ru/reel/juliaartem.html Ram Purad February 15th, 2008, 07:34 PM Non typical indeed!!! When I clicked the link, first I thought my damn spyware re-directed me to a soft porn site ;-) Then I realized it is the right clip. I like your technical work. Shooting and editing are great. Seems to fit the music well. But the whole explicit thing, I don't think it will fit well with the wedding indusrty. Then again it all depends on the country, culture and more importantly the couple. If B&G are up for it, then I don't see a problem. And in this case, they seems to be very open minded so it might work out. I wish my brides are like this, although my wife won't allow me to shoot weddings if they are ;-) Oleg Kalyan February 16th, 2008, 12:35 AM Ram, thank you, you know this clip was just a non typical approach to editing, and is a part of a long wedding film, I see this clip as sensual, playful, loving, all that reflect this particular couple, and my directorial approach to storytelling. The wedding took place at a rebuilt castle Maindorf, just outside of Moscow. Original material allows me to approach this film differently, and allowed me to be maybe a little more original. Regards, Oleg! Noa Put February 16th, 2008, 03:38 AM Now this was refreshing! I really liked the way you approached it. Think I saw some flashlights and so on during the shoot, did you get some help with the lighting? What camera did you use? How did you compress for the web because your clip looked razorsharp. Sorry for so many questions but I would be thankfull if you could share some of your shooting and editing secrets. :) John Moon February 16th, 2008, 08:18 AM Oleg: I liked it. Sometimes you just have to push the envelope a bit. I liked you creative use of light. John Frank Simpson February 16th, 2008, 09:50 AM Brilliantly produced. Technically excellent, but as to "storytelling", I don't see it. There's really no narrative; it's more of an image montage, and at that I got tired of it about halfway through. It really seemed like an assemblage of transitions rather than a piece with actual substance. In my opinion (and it is only this, my opinion) it's all about style and vrtually nothing about content. As a memento or keepsake for the couple, I'm sure they'll LOVE it, but I don't think it's the kind of thing that has an appeal for other audiences. Jason Magbanua February 16th, 2008, 10:57 AM WHOAA! love the technique and the concept. not for everybody but I sure as hell liked it. thanks for sharing. Jason Donaldson February 16th, 2008, 01:04 PM I absolutely loved it...would love to know your editing techniques and "how to's" of how you did that...what editing software, etc. Oleg Kalyan February 16th, 2008, 04:15 PM Thank you, Everyone for your comments, and support : ) The piece was shot one camera Canon A1, 50i Pal, HDV, edited 16/9 DV in FCP, used FCP plugins and Boris Continuum Complete, I used Compressor to make a web clip, H264, 1200 kbs There was a photographer working at the same time, with the help of his assistant, I had some portable light going steady and moving during the shots. As far as editing goes it was not meant to be a story rather a clip, sort of a music video, not having a narrative, rather mixing things up, so it's "reality, dream and imagination going all at the same time", if this explanation makes any sense : ) Richard Wakefield February 16th, 2008, 05:11 PM Brilliant!! refreshing, creative, stylish, erotic... i'm not convinced however that they'll be showing the future kids or in-laws, LOL and i'm telling you now, if i came home with footage like that, i'm not sure i'd be in a relationship anymore :) so is the girl in that an actress? she's very natural infront of a camera... to those that think this clip is just plain rude, try watching it in reverse! seriously though, great encoding and overally just very different and refreshing Alastair Brown February 16th, 2008, 10:34 PM Hubba Hubba, he's a lucky man! Oleg Kalyan February 17th, 2008, 01:11 AM Thanks again, The Bride is not an actress, she could be one, couldn't she! When we were shooting that particular part of the wedding B&G opened up for the camera...at the beginning they were skeptical about that particular part, and me talking about the shot inside covered bed...the room, furniture allowed some creative, intimate fantasy, so I explored that, and they went for it, we had a great deal of communication, trust. I agree that the Groom is a lucky man, just like all of the Grooms on the Wedding Day! Victor Kellar February 17th, 2008, 11:05 AM First: Its different. I love different. Different is good. If I see one more sequence of slo mo clips with the bride in salon chair intermixed with the groorm standing at the alter with a VO: "I met Jenny in high school..." I'll just barf. I make money of that style but I still barf Second: Technincally you put some real work into this. Image quality is very high. Shot composition is solid as is camera movement. Technically the editing is tight I have no problem with a non linear editing style. Sometimes we get too "boxed in" with our wedding timelines My only issue is that the music and the technique may not match the content and the shooting style. I may have started with music that was a bit slower, more sensuous and let your nice camerawork just flow from one shot to the next for a bit, building that sense of mood and sensuality, then transitioned to the faster paced, fast cutting that you do. Also, maybe a bit of over kill with the effects, you have good quality images you can let them speak for you Overall, though, you have something distinct and individual and I am always for that Oleg Kalyan February 18th, 2008, 04:42 AM Victor, Thank you! Could you suggest the music that you think will fit. I can certainly change the pace, the music I've used doesn't suggest a build and dynamic, emotional change.. Cheers! Dotun Adesida February 28th, 2008, 02:30 AM Waoh! I admire the art direction, the sensuality was not actually as vivid as some comments painted it. To me, it's cool so long as the couple approves of it. But I agree with Victor about the music. My only issue is that the music and the technique may not match the content and the shooting style. . Just that I cant place a finger on any particular music, but I will brainstorm on that. That was some fantastic piece of work. I got your site bookmarked already! Will be watching out for more creative stuff from you. Oleg Kalyan February 28th, 2008, 11:25 AM Dotun, thank you for your nice words, I am working on some interesting wedding clip ideas! Ken Diewert March 2nd, 2008, 03:05 AM Oleg, Dude, you're the man! Thanks for taking chances and thanks for sharing. I don't normally read the wedding forum, but I've got a couple coming up, and I was looking to see what people were shooting and I've got to say, this stuff you've been doing is great. I'm more partial to your other piece (wine glasses. redhead and elevator), but this piece is pushing boundaries. I was just at a bridal show (my wife does photos, so we shared a booth). Man, I've go to say, I would have loved to demo some work like this. Thanks again! Oleg Kalyan March 2nd, 2008, 03:11 PM Ken, thank you for your kind words! :) How is the bridal show, where does it take place? I hope some great videographers, wedding film studios demo their work there! I'd love to hear more about the show! I'd love to go to Canada one day, please let me know about some venues! Promise, will do my best to keep up! Cheers! Oleg. John Stakes March 3rd, 2008, 05:39 PM well I have to be honest...i didn't like it. but that's what personal opinions are for right? I did like the effects though (don't know if that sounds contradictory) and I can tell you put some time in it. But let me tell you what i DO like. I like that you have your own unique style. Many of the videos I watch seem like they could come from the same person, or fit that "wedding video" type of template. But your videos are very creative and you have a good range of techniques to draw from. So the being said, very nice work! (hope that made sense) -JS John Stakes March 3rd, 2008, 10:49 PM sorry Oleg, thought I should be more critical...or specific rather. I watched it a second time, and... I think the only thing I didn't like was the speeding up of the shots throughout. I did like it at the end though. Color was great. -JS Sean Seah March 4th, 2008, 12:03 AM Cool! Realli something different :) Nice use of the lights! Oleg Kalyan March 4th, 2008, 12:13 AM John, appreciate for watching it twice! Sean, thank you! Ken Diewert March 4th, 2008, 01:05 AM How is the bridal show, where does it take place? I hope some great videographers, wedding film studios demo their work there! I'd love to hear more about the show! I'd love to go to Canada one day, please let me know about some venues! Promise, will do my best to keep up! Cheers! Oleg. Oleg, At bridal shows, it's florists, cake decorators, dress designers, photographers, anyone who has something to sell to brides. At this show, they only allowed one professional per category. My wife is a photographer who wanted to go, but they wouldn't let her, because there was already a photog there. So I registered as a videographer, and she came and secretly promoted her photography. As I said, I'm not really into filming weddings because of all the work for the low pay. But I'm doing a couple this year and I'm going to show your work to the couples and see if they are game to try something like this. If it works I would like to develop the style, and look to market the idea of a 10-minute short film story instead of the cliche-type videos. For example, one wedding I have booked in June will be in a forest type setting. I have the idea to film the couple in B&W, slo-mo, sun streaks thru the trees, running thru the forest (maybe a CU of a dropped shoe). Perhaps the damsel is in distress from an unseen pursuer and the the groom arrives in time and rescues her. I think it's something that could be done in a relatively short time. Thanks for the inspiration. If I can get one done sooner, I'll post the results. Ken. Oleg Kalyan March 5th, 2008, 03:27 AM Ken, your idea of a wedding film in a forest type setting sounds great. "I have the idea to film the couple in B&W, slo-mo, sun streaks thru the trees, running thru the forest (maybe a CU of a dropped shoe) Perhaps the damsel is in distress from an unseen pursuer and the the groom arrives in time and rescues her" You have great visuals there, I look forward to see that! We all inspire each other, don't we?! Buba Kastorski March 6th, 2008, 08:51 PM Kaлян. awesome stufffff, what's the camera, edit is super, and the bride is just unreal, Thanks for sharing! :-) Greg Patch March 6th, 2008, 09:10 PM I love it. I'm a huge fan of your work. I really liked the reverse fireworks at the end.. Oleg Kalyan March 7th, 2008, 01:58 AM Buba, thank you, Do you speak Russian? Greg, Cheers! Will do my best to keep up! |
