It's been bothering me that I can't create an HDV file and then export it to tape at a later date. I think I've figured it out. Here's how.

You need to create the HDV file first. That I did by following the instructions at: http://www.mail-archive.com/adobe-premiere@yahoogroups.com/msg08166.html

Now you need an export to tape program. Luckily Premiere comes with the following utility "MPEGHDVEXPORT.EXE" It's in the main premiere folder. I used it as follows:

MPEGHDVEXPORT.EXE "e:\movie.hdv2"

I used the quotes because I had some spaces in my filename. I was able to see the file going out to the camera, but it didn't put the camera into record mode. So, I believe you'll have to hit the record button on your camera yourself.

My method is a bit untested, but hopefully it will help those of you looking for the same solution as myself, or we'll figure it all out together.

Maybe I am missing something in what you want to do. But this is what I have done in PP2. With my HDV camcorder (V1U) hooked up through firewire. I went to "file". Then to "export". And then to "export to tape". It conforms the program to HDV and at some point it will start recording out to the camcorder. It seemed to take a lot of time to render to HDV, at least on my computor. But it was pretty simple straight forward process.

I think what Dave was trying to do is to eliminate one unneccessary rendering. He wants to render HDV file and work with that later, and not have to render again from Premiere if he wants to simply output that file into tape.
