right now i'm using a rode shotgun mic... but i want to get closer (auido wise) to all the action. I'm looking for a digital recorder that can be hooked up to a lapel mic. Any suggestions. i'm working with a low budget, i'm looking for something around 150...

i've heard a lot of great things about the H2... just seeing if anyone was using something else... maybe even a little cheaper. If not then i'll probably break down and buy it. Just not as soon as i would like to be able to.

Some of us are using the iRivers, although they're no longer manufactured.
Try looking around the internet to see if you can find one, it might be worth it if there's a reasonable deal. I think I paid $50 shipped for one, although I can't remember for sure.

PM if you want an iriver - I picked up an H2 so I've got a couple to spare floating around rather sell to a DVi'er than eBay which is where my excess stuff usually goes. Irivers are nice for the price, havent' had a chance to A/B the Zoom, but I had in mind for more of an ambient solution - the Irivers are good to stick in a pocket and go.

i've heard good things about the Olympus recorders, but they record in WMA format...whereas the H2 records in WAV.
This brings a question, since you usually compress audio after it is recorded, are there any disadvantages to just recording it compressed from the jump? I know it saves time, and takes away total control, but what do you guys think?
...also recommend other solutions as I am not trying to hijack the thread.
EDIT: I just noticed this is an old thread...so you probably made your purchase by now, so in that case I will hijack :)

Edirol R9 has worked flawlessly for us. We use a Giant Squid lapel mic with the recorder.
