I can't seem to find the answer to this question anywhere so maybe I'm missing the point.

Assuming I export my audio tracks as an OMF file, then import this into my audio editing s/w and sweeten it, how do I get that sweetened sound track back into FCP and my sequence?

It would need to be sweetened in a program that supports OMF, like Pro tools. After sweetening, import the file back into FCP.

Unless I'm missing the option though I don't see any file/import/omf ? ? ? Am I really missing something here?

You have a file that you know is OMF and it doesn't appear when you select <Import>? I don't use ProTools any more so I'm not sure I'll be much help. I think on Avid I could drag and drop also. Have you tried that?

I tried this:

1. Created a short sequence
2. Exported the audio to the desktop as an omf
3. Created a new sequence
4. Tried to re-import the omf file and got the message: error, unknown file.


I tried to import back into the original sequence too, on new audio tracks, this didn't work either.. ..

I don't see an option to import files of type 'omf' .. ..

What is the advantage of OMF vs. say, uncompressed AIFF?

I have to say I'm still mystified though, it doesn't tell you the exact process of how to re-import the audio, only that the audio will be a stereo pair ready to drop back into your sequence and output with the video.

From this would I be right in supposing that the stereo pair is actually re-imported back into FCP as a WAV file, which is then dropped in on L & R audio tracks in an overwrite edit?

From everything I've read this seems more and more likely to be the case.
