View Full Version : Viewing footage on a Power Book G4

Hi folks...

Got my first gig shooting on the camera tomorrow and had a quick question.

My initial work flow is going to work like this:

1) Shoot on PMW EX1
2) Dump Cards on to Powerbook G4 12" without Final Cut 2...so I'm just viewing the camera as a removable drive and pulling the BPAV folder off the camera.
3) Putting the BPAV folders on to an 80 gb Firelite firewire drive...so now there will be 2 BPAV folder.
4) Do a quick monitor of a couple clips on my PowerBook.
5) Reformat cards
6) Start shooting again.

So my question refers to #4 from above. I'm not able to view the clips in QT since I'm not importing via Sony's tool. I can view the video using VLC player, but I'm currently not hearing any audio. Can anyone suggest a good view that can play the native files from the PMW? The above workflow has been working for me in my tests with the exception of being able to hear the audio when I'm doing my "sanity check" in step 4.

Thanks

I'd highly suggest using the XDCAM Transfer utility, a free download from Sony. I believe Craig Seeman posted a link to it a while back, since it is otherwise very hard to find. It will allow you to capture, view, and log footage and can run on non-intel macs. I use it instead of clip browser on a G5 tower.

Yes I posted it a while back. It really needs to be a Sticky methinks. The UK link is much easier to find than the USA link. I contacted Sony US about that.

So, even if I don't have Final Cut on this machine it should work?

I'm getting an error message that since I don't have apple's pro codec installed I can't view the footage. The transfer tool does in fact open, but I can't really do anything...meaning many features are disabled.

Is this hopeless without FCS 2 installed?

Thanks

Quciktime can't show the files, it might work if you have the codecs from final cut 6.02.

Vlc can't play sound from the mp4s

Mplayer can play video and audio on win32 so this might work.

Give MPEG Streamclip a try.

I haven't tried it with EX files but it's worked with everything else i've thrown at it on a mac.
