Jeff Nelson July 17th, 2009, 10:51 AM Thanks, Battle! Appreciate this. Just what I'm looking for.
Kevin Duffey July 17th, 2009, 06:41 PM Hey all,
I am moving to Sacramento area mid August time frame. I'd really like to try to learn a bit more post production work, as well as either watch, or even help on taking video for corporate events, weddings, etc. I am not asking for compensation but wouldn't turn it down if my help/work is of value. I'd rather accept compensation in the way of time with someone to learn the ropes. Ideally I'd like to look at doing this part time initially for pay (after I learn a bit), but as I don't have the right gear or the money to get it just yet, being able to participate with someone and learn while using their gear would be most helpful.
I do have a solid understanding of video cameras, their technical aspects, as well as a long background of computers including doing some editing with Premiere. I'd love to learn more about color correcting shots, as well as how to best set up cameras for certain events including using lighting and such.
Thank you.
Raymond Tsang July 18th, 2009, 12:03 PM StillMotion. Done.
Douglas Wright July 20th, 2009, 02:42 AM Thanks, Battle! Appreciate this. Just what I'm looking for.
I have an XH-A1 and I'm in miami. You can contact me at info@legendsfilms.com if you want more info...and my website is at that same address.
Corey Williams July 20th, 2009, 12:37 PM I'm seeking a videographer in the Jackson, MS area. If interested, please email me at Corey.Williams@CaptureTheMarket.com for more details.

Jeff Kellam July 20th, 2009, 03:27 PM The most important thing is, what's your budget?
Glen Elliott July 20th, 2009, 05:07 PM After being engaged for something like 4 years, the fiance and I have finally set a date, booked a hall and have begun actually planning the wedding. Being a professional image maker (I should put that on my business card) I've taken charge of arranging the visual documentation of our big day. I'm happy to report that we've found a GREAT photographer that we're very excited to work with.
And then there's video. I'm amazed by the amount of crap out there. All of the photo studios we looked at offered video as well and they all sucked at it. The studio we're going with does acceptable video but nothing really great. If I don't find anything else, that will be the way to go but before I give in, I want to look for a place/person that does only video and does it REALLY well. So here I am.
The date: January 15, 2011 (18 months from yesterday so there's still time)
The place: Reception in Mineola, Long Island (NY). Ceremony TBD but not far from that.
If anyone wants to submit themselves for consideration or has any recommendations for quality videographers in my neck of the woods, reply here or PM me.
Thanks very much!
~~Dave
That's kind of far in advance- I usually only book 1 calendar year in advance. However the date is available.
Dave Dodds July 20th, 2009, 07:42 PM I know it's very far but I like to get things done.
Also, budget is not the most important thing. And I expect that sort of mentality from the person I end up going with. I know we do what we do to make a living, but at the same time, I want someone who thinks the most important thing is that we get a beautiful documentation of our special day. Money talk comes last, just before we sign the deal. I will say though, that if anyone charges anything close to the price of a new car, don't bother.
Also, ideally we'd like to use someone in/around NYC - or considers western Long Island a "local" job. There have been a number of private responses from people who have phenomenal portfolios but are about as far from NY as you can get. I appreciate the interest but it's just not feasible.
Thanks for all of the responses so far.

Any shoot or distance is feasible if you have money. If not, you are on a "budget".

Dave Dodds July 21st, 2009, 01:20 PM Any shoot or distance is feasible if you have money. If not, you are on a "budget".
Yes, I am "on a budget." That is, I don't have a limitless amount of money at my disposal for this. I never said I did. If anyone on here is in that sort of a position where they just want to throw as much money as possible somewhere, let me know. I'd love to work for you.
The locale thing is just a matter of being wise with my money. After all, this wedding is the start of my life with someone and I've got to continue building it. I mean, if someone in the UK quotes me $5000 plus travel for a great package and I find a comparable package/quality locally for $5000 (no travel needed), what's the smart move?
Kit Hannah July 21st, 2009, 01:52 PM I mean, if someone in the UK quotes me $5000 plus travel for a great package and I find a comparable package/quality locally for $5000 (no travel needed), what's the smart move?
I'd say it depends on how good they are.
Dave Dodds July 21st, 2009, 02:15 PM Absolutely. But if they were of a comparable quality and style, it makes more sense to go local, no?
I'm just saying, I am willing to make this an investment - heck it'll be one of the most important days of my life. But I want to make it a wise one and only spend as much as I need to.
Paul R Johnson July 21st, 2009, 02:21 PM Dave - I'm really confused now. Money isn't important, but there is a budget, but then you mention two $5000 deals, but then suggest the smart move is to take the no travel cost option?
Surely, the wedding is very important to you as a prospective bridegroom. Video style and quality is important as a video professional. You're more aware than the usual wedding client how much things cost vs the small differences extra money brings.
In your position, I'd want to see other people's work for varying budgets. For $X I can do this, or for $Y I can do this. People can show you the work and then you can decide. I suspect people just want to know if you are thinking $500 or $5000, that's all.
If it was me, I'd not want somebody elses edit - I'd always find things I didn't like, so I'd spend my entire budget on aquisition, and then do the edit myself, at my convenience in my style.
Simply engage shooters, who work on your instructions of what to shoot. Much better use of budget, and what you do with it is up to you. They shoot and just hand the media to you - end of job. I rarely am comfortable with finished products from other people.
Amie Spiridigliozzi July 21st, 2009, 03:08 PM Hi,
Congratualtions on your upcoming wedding. I got married 3 weeks ago and it was great!
I have friends that live in NY and would be willing to travel for your wedding. Check out my work at Angelina Video Productions - Weddings and Events serving Danvers, Massachusetts - New Hampshire - Rhode Island - Maine (http://www.AngelinaVideo.com). I film in both SD and HD.

I guess I'm being a big butthead about this. I've been trying to get across - without divulging any figures - the idea that I'm not looking to spend a fortune but I am willing to pay for quality. Based on packages I've reviewed from various vendors, I think it'd be fair to expect to spend $2000-4000 on something really good. I hope that clears things up.
Also, I am looking for the full deal. While I do edit, I'm more of a shooter and I don't think I'd have the patience to do a good enough job on the video edit.
Sorry if I've been a pain - just a bit stressed trying to make sure I do the best thing for our wedding. Thank you everyone for the great responses and for the advice - and of course your patience. Keep 'em coming.
~~Dave
Raymond Tsang July 21st, 2009, 06:15 PM Dave,
Having recently been married, I can understand what you're going through. There's nothing butthead about it! We live in LA and spent months looking for the "right" videographer. One thing we found was that for a certain figure, say $4000, we could find locals to shoot our wedding or an equivalent studio from out of state. In this economy, the b&g have plenty of negotiating leverage (gasp).
In the end, we went with StillMotion and after our SDE was shown, it was obvious that we had made the right choice (for us, as a couple). Being in NY though, I would think there's a whole range of talent open to you. But cost of living is high so that's obviously factored into the local pricing. Good luck with the search.

I've known a few editors that have done this in the past and I can't even remotely imagine editing my own wedding (provided I ever marry again :). It would just be too bizarre I think.

Mat Thompson July 25th, 2009, 03:45 AM Hi guys
I'm working on a music video at the moment ,basically workload being the way it is we are now looking to get some help on this. It won't pay lots but it will pay. I have in the region of 50 shots that need to be keyed, colour corrected and comped onto a 3d background. The 3d is already created although needs finishing (by us) and would be supplied as a max file for you to render as needed in each shot (if you don't know or use max I could do this part) so it would mainly be after effects work really. (Or other post program if you like)
We do have some green spill in quite a few shots so some may need multilpe masks/layers and corrections.
I have a short green screen cut and a finished shot to show what we are doing.
Please email me if you are interested mat@3dvisions.co.uk - I'd like to see some example of this sort of work if possible please.
Many thanks
Mat

Lisa Bennett August 1st, 2009, 09:29 PM Does anyone know a PM in LA that can help us with a budget? We are located in Central FL in preproduction on a 30 minute tv pilot that will be shot in LA. At the present time we are looking for someone to join our team that can help us prepare a budget and join the project when we begin production. There is a possibility of having a sponsor/funder but in order to prepare what they need, we are looking for a production manager with experience on budgeting LA rates to prepare this budget. We need a PM that is willing to do the budget on deferment, but working on the actual show will be a paid position. Please contact us by email if you can join us on this exciting project. ( studioc@studiocpictures.com )
Jack Walker August 2nd, 2009, 01:31 PM Gorilla Software has a ratebook that works with their budget software. You might look at this:

Ethan Cooper August 4th, 2009, 08:53 AM I'm part of a group participating in a 48hr film festival in New Orleans on the 14th - 16th of this month. We had a team meeting last night and it came to my attention that we still need an audio person. Anyone interested in helping out?
I was also told that they are still trying to get their hands on a field mixer. Oh and if you happen to have a spare fully loaded grip truck sitting around your driveway that would be nice and if your driveway is attached to a sound stage complete with sets, well that's just fine and dandy too.
Ethan Cooper August 6th, 2009, 12:33 PM I got word last night that our Director lined up an audio guy so that need isn't there anymore. Thanks to those who responded off list.
Bryan McCullough August 6th, 2009, 07:01 PM I've got a potential project in Austin that I might need someone to shoot. The client isn't sure he wants to pay my travel fee to come from Dallas to Austin.
It's a pretty straight forward instructional video shoot, they're going to demo two products and I need material shot so that we can make an instructional video from it. This video will be packaged with the products so people can see how to use them.
I have some links for the current videos that they have (homemade) and can share them with potential shooters but I don't want to post them publicly.
Both demos would be about ten minutes in real time so I'd imagine the entire shoot wouldn't take longer than 2 hours to get wideshots, closeups, etc.
If you're interested contact me ASAP at bryanmc @ gmail.com
I need rates and availability over the next few weeks, this guy wants to move pretty quickly.
Thanks!
Björn Rehder August 10th, 2009, 08:35 AM Hi All,
Anybody in Germany who can assist me logistically to aquire footage of Barley (Weizen) & Hops (Hopfen) in Germany or surrounding countries? Or has anyone got Library footage of above? (HDV 1920X1080 50i)
I need the fields just before harvest time and the harvest itself. Need to document the history/tradition of beer.
There's a chance I have to fly to Germany middle to end of September 09 and I'm wondering if should bring my own gear or possibly rent equipment over there. Preferably Canon XH A1 or XL H1. With tripod and the works.
Any help or pointers into the right direction is much appreciated.
Many Thanks
Ethan Cooper August 10th, 2009, 12:24 PM Hurray for backing out at the last minute.
Looks like we're still in need of some audio help.
Things we need other than someone to do audio for us are:
Field mixer
additional runs of cable (XLR)
We could also use a c-stand or two.
Duncan Craig August 10th, 2009, 03:11 PM I could certainly shoot some Barley for you, there's plenty of crop fields around here. But hops will be a lot more difficult I'm afraid.
I've looked them up here: Hops - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hops) and I've never seen anything like them before while out walking.
Ben Mahoney August 10th, 2009, 05:04 PM I have a client that I worked with in Chicago that is looking to find a videographer/editor for an event at The Hill Restaurant. The Hill New York -perfect place to meet friends, have a birthday or private party, or watch sporting events (http://www.thehillny.com)
Pretty basic highlight video, not sure whats up with sound and lighting. The last event I just needed a handheld mic for some interviews. Prob would need an on camera light as well. I'm just doing them a favor in finding someone so I can give you contact info once I hear back, thought I would give out this gig to the community. If you have questions, you can email me at benmahoneyproductions@gmail.com
Thanks!
Marco Leavitt August 11th, 2009, 03:12 PM Hey Dave. I'm in Albany, N.Y., and I could put together a two camera two shooter package in the price range you are considering.

Gregor Baumann August 13th, 2009, 08:19 AM Hi folks!
I'm about to record a long drummer-concert on 26. and 27. September 2009 at FEZ-Berlin. The "Samba Syndrom" is a big workshop for amateurs and professionals. The concert recording is about their evening-presentation.
I need three camera operators für these days. Budget is 150€ for every operator.
Beginners are welcome!
We edit live and communicate via intercom. The result will be a dual-DVD for sale (about 150x) and live-video on screen.
Talking language for the video-team is strict German!
If you are interested or know someone, just mail me your CV and some video-previews

Nick Hall August 14th, 2009, 07:32 AM Hi
I would like to find a good camera guy around the Frankfurt area to help me get a project off the ground. It's shooting a pilot for a show and it will involve lots of high-powered glamorous supercars.
So if you'd like to shoot them then get in touch, it will be low paid to start with, but I hope I can turn it into something useful.
By the time we start shooting I should have a Sony HVR-Z1 and an A1E back-up, but if you have your own equipment it would obviously be a big bonus.
This is not restricted to top line pros, passionate amateurs with a real eye for a shot are welcome.
Thanks

Tramm Hudson August 16th, 2009, 08:43 AM I am looking for a crew and talent to make a short next weekend (22 August) as practice for The 48 Hour Film Project (http://www.48hourfilm.com/). Earlier this year our 48 Hour short was featured as a "Best of DC": Bad Media on Vimeo (http://vimeo.com/channels/bad)
I'm looking for crew (please send resume and links to previous works):
* Director
* Scriptwriter
* Sound tech / boom operator
* Composer
* Assistant camera operator / focus puller
* Grips
* Lighting tech
* Editors
And talent: any age, any sex, any race. Please send headshot, resume and links to any works that are online.
The plan is to do a simulation of the rules of the real 48 Hour Film project: Friday night we will draw a genre and have 48 hours to write, direct, film, edit and score the 4-7 minute short. We will be filming on digital 35mm at 1080p. The short will be posted to Vimeo in HD and everyone will receive onscreen credits and a DVD for their demo reel.
Chris Barcellos August 16th, 2009, 11:15 AM Tramm:
I usually do San Jose 48 hour here in California, but missed it this year.
I was itching with hearing about Jon shooting.
Just wondering if there is enough interest in the 5D community to run a 48 hour in conjunction with you at the same time as yours.
Gregor Baumann August 18th, 2009, 12:02 PM Thread closed!
