Yi Fong Yu April 28th, 2008, 03:00 PM after doing some light research, wired solution still seems to be the best bang for the buck. you can even pay a bit more to get certain camcorders taht can capture license plate #s in great detail, but not every camcorder.
if you paid $15,000 for a wired system and you used that same budget on a wireless, you get degraded quality.
will wirelessHD resolve these types of issues? the IP-based camcorders i've seen are around 200-300 lines res. 400+ can get extremely pricey let alone HD. i would think security would require something extremely hi-def to capture what is happening onscreen, i'm surprised no1 has come up with a solution to do it wired or wireless!
Barry Wilkinson April 30th, 2008, 09:11 AM Does anyone out there by any chance need an adaptor box from a beta camera (not sp, the one which splits from the recorder section) for studio use? Its old but has never been used.
It clips on the back of the camera and I think gives multicore out.
Nathan Quattrini May 2nd, 2008, 09:36 AM I need to find some for tomorrow but can`t seem to find any stores selling them. I need the Panasonic AY-DVM63PQ tapes since they are all I use in my camera. Any ideas on places that might carry them? Obscure or not. I tried Stpales, Best Buy, Ritz Camera....no one even has HDV cameras :\ I`m in rhode island if thats any help
Jack Kelly May 6th, 2008, 04:29 AM Silicon Imaging and RED have really blazed a trail with their "RAW" cameras and Adobe are making some very interesting noises about enabling RAW workflows for cinema. Personally, I'm more excited about RAW cameras than I was about HD. I love shooting RAW on my Nikon D50. Capturing RAW means you can grade the pictures so much more elegantly and it also means you don't have to worry too much about digging through massive camera menus on set. You just shoot and tweak to your heart's content in post.
Given that RAW is such a damn good idea and has been proved as a viable shooting format, my question is this: how long do we wait until other manufacturers start offering cameras which record a very lightly compressed copy of exactly what the sensor produces and leaves all the processing to post?
Has anyone heard any rumours or speculation about Sony, Canon, Nikon, Sigma etc making RAW movie cameras? Personally, I would kill for something like a Nikon D3 which can shoot 1080p at 25fps RAW with balanced stereo audio which sells for about £4500 (the D3 can already shoot at 11fps at 5 megapixels). Sure, the RED Scarlet gets pretty close and the RED ONE gets very very close.
Mark Irvine May 6th, 2008, 10:03 PM I want to digitise my Vid8, Hi8, Digital8 & MiniDV tapes to HDD for storage in a lossless format. I have captured a few tapes through Premiere Elements but the resulting .avi seems to be lower quality than the original tape. I've been researching lossless codecs and found Toponoky and FastCodec but I don't understand how these work with a capture program. I don't want to edit these captures, I just want to keep them as the best possible file type for future burning to DVD, Blueray or whatever new disk/solid state medium comes along. I would like to create DVDs for everyday viewing and understand some resolution loss will have to be accepted. But I want the archived files to the same resolution as the original tapes. I know that all the above formats have varying degrees of compression/resolution. I just don't want the capture to lose even more resolution. Any suggestions?? (many thanks)
Peter Wiley May 8th, 2008, 03:08 PM I am teaching a motion picture making workshop for teens this summer. There may be a small amount of money for purchase of simple miniDV cameras for students to use.
Can you make a suggestion for inexpensive, and I mean the least expensive, miniDV cameras that might work well? There is not money for "prosumer."
Minimum requirements would include a mic out and rugged construction.
Thanks for suggestions.
Peter Sebastian May 15th, 2008, 12:36 AM Hello everyone,
I am working on a project for a small theater and we are tying a theatrical trick that I believe requires a video mixing set up. We need to have two live video feeds (from two cameras) on the same monitor. One has to be slightly transparent and on top of the other image.
I looked into getting two blackmagic intensity pro cards and using their 'On Air' program but that is actually more then I think we need. We don't need a high quality image. What would be the most inexpensive set up that I could use?
I am using a Mac Pro and/or a Mac Book Pro.

Andres Sanchez May 19th, 2008, 01:06 PM Hi, I bought a Radioshack-brand cleaner tape for the film heads on my Samsung Mini DV camcorder not too long ago and today when I put it in my camera it gets ejected immediately.
Is this a problem with the tape or the camera?
thanks in advance.
Steven Davis May 21st, 2008, 07:01 AM Has anyone had success with a lens such as http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/361301-REG/Century_Precision_Optics_0VS_16TC_HDS_1_6x_Telephoto_Converter_Lens.html or not. I'm trying to find one to rent for a gig, but don't want to rent it if it's not going to work well.
I'm going to hook this on my Sony V1u or Sony Z1u.
Thomas Johansson May 23rd, 2008, 01:36 PM Hey guys!
I have a question. I'm finally starting to get my head around aspect ratios and how everything works... but still there are some things I just don't get. Any help with this would be very much appreciated.
Normal TV aspect ratio is 1.33, or 4:3, and yeah.. that seems all good for 640x480 for example. But if I would convert this to PAL land for a little while...
SD DV is 720x576. In square pixels this is 786x576 for everything to look right on screen, but this means a DAR of 1.3645?? A true 1.33 ratio would mean 768x576, but this in practice doesn't seem to fit the original footage.
Same thing is true for widescreen, 16:9 which means 1.78. Again DV is 720x576. The PAR for widescreen is about 1.46, which means that in square pixels this would become 1048x576... but this again equals to DAR of 1.82 where you really want 1.78? Again... what you would want seems to be 1024x576 for a 16:9 relationship but this doesn't seem to fit the original image.
Where do I go wrong? Thx a lot!
Also.. why are widescreen computer screens 1.6? Shouldn't they be 1.78??
Guy Godwin June 2nd, 2008, 11:00 AM I have been looking all over the internet for some methods and way to create a video library on a web site.
If anyone has any good resources that you can provide that would be great.
Thanks!
Guy Godwin June 5th, 2008, 05:24 AM I have lost the little gizmo that is used to attached my lanc pan handle to my 503 head?
Does anyone know the correct name for this gear/screw connector?

Joe Rinn June 9th, 2008, 12:18 PM I purchased a Canon HG10 Camcorder in October of 2008 and see there is a new Canon DW-100 DVD burner.
Will the DW-100 work with the HG10 or does it only work with the new VIXIA line of camcorders? For some reason, I thought I heard there might be a firmware upgare to allow its use with the HG10.
Thanks!
Christopher Drews June 9th, 2008, 05:15 PM I attached a screenshot. Does this mean it will upress a 720 24p sequence from Final Cut Pro to a HD-CAM SR? Does this emulate a Kona board for outputting (keeping in mind that it accepts tri-level sync)?

Guy Godwin June 9th, 2008, 08:25 PM What do i need to do to get this to play much faster? It takes forever for the player image to display. Once it is up it plays great. But the wait seems endless.
In fact, I bet you will not see the footage because of the wait time...
It takes it a few minutes to load the page, but it is there. ( I need to work on the web delivery!!)

Scott Warren June 24th, 2008, 04:21 PM Hello,
I've been through so many forums and emails with Sony regarding their HDCAM-SR deck and attempting a downconvert from the SR (at 23.98fps HD) to Digibeta (SD 30fps). I've managed to get settings on both decks figured out, through help from forums and Sony, but now I am having TC issues. On all my test dubs, the Digibeta TC is roughly 3 seconds off from the master (HD version). Anybody out there have any experience with the SR deck and downconverting? It's taking me way too long to figure this out. Any ideas or input is most helpful. Thanks!

Dylan Couper July 7th, 2008, 09:30 PM I'm in the market for a rolling camera backpack, just wondering if anyone has an opinion on the Lowepro Compu Trekker Plus versus the Lowepro Road Runner.
Or if anyone has suggestions of bags from other companies in this market, I'd love to hear about them.
Thanks!

Each keyboard has an Lcd display on each key. So no matter what editing app, from Fcp to Photoshop, each key shows the shortcuts when you select the app. Each key is fully programmable and any icons, jpegs can be assigned to each key display.
It’s a shame about the crazy price!

Joe Hubbard July 27th, 2008, 05:31 PM Hello all,
I did a DV interview recently, and being a newbie, didn't realize the importance of a field mixer. The result is audio that clips. In Apple Soundtrack, the clip distortion tool takes care of the distortion but it drops the high end. Anyone had luck with this tool? Any techniques for vocals? Many thanks!

Bob Kerner August 4th, 2008, 05:14 PM Hello. It's bullet cam question day, based on the other thread below. Is there such a thing as a bullet cam that operates with image stabilization?
I'd like to use a small helmet-mounted device to shoot cycling and other action sports and maintain the functionality of the IS in my camera. I'd prefer not mounting my entire camera to my helment.
My guess is that this isn't feasible (since the cam has no way to provide the IS control to an accessory lens bringing signal in thru the A/C port) or it would be easy to find them on the 'net but none of the models I've found list this feature.
Thanks
Richard Leadbetter August 7th, 2008, 08:11 AM Hi,
I'm looking to choose an HD camera that's capable of acquiring 720p and 1080p progressively at 30fps. The idea is to intersperse videogaming footage with talking heads shot with the camera. As games run typically at 60fps or 30fps, the usual 24fps isn't good for me.
The only other requirements I'd have would be:
1. Recording to a hard disk would be preferable, as would painless transfer into the CineForm HD codec
2. Reasonably wide-angle lens to accomodate 3-4 people in a studio-like settings
3. Two discrete audio inputs for Mics - XLR inputs?
Any suggestions across the price range would be much appreciated.
Andy Jones August 7th, 2008, 02:21 PM Please excuse me if this is a stupid question...
There are HDV camcorders with CMOS sensors that can also record in standard definition DV mode. When filming in SD mode does the CMOS sensor operate in a "global shutter" mode, thus eliminating the possible artifect of white bands occuring during flashes of light ?
I ask this as I understand that standard definition DV mode records a complete frame each time, whereas the rolling shutter artifact is caused by the sensor sampling different parts between frames which would not seem compatible with DV mode recording.
James A. Davis August 15th, 2008, 09:19 PM It's the weirdest thing. I'm using DVFilmaker. I have 60i footage shot on a DVX-100a w/anamorphic lens. When I squeeze it to fit a 16X9 box (without converting to 24p) its deinterlaces with the blurry lines when theres alot of motion. When I convert to 24p w/deinterlacing it's fine. Even when I deinterlace its fine. But I want my anamorphic footage to look like raw 60i...NOT deinterlaced 30i/p looking footage.
Anyone have any answers or suggestions? Is it possible?
Chris Swinbanks August 17th, 2008, 11:57 PM Searching seems to have turned up little information on this... perhaps someone here can help?
The Panasonic HDC-SD5 has an internal battery slot which prevents from upgrading to a longer-life (ie bulkier) battery to get more useful shooting time. It seems to have been matched with 8Gb SDHC card supplied (as a freebie) with the camera for about 90 minutes max use. Its a Li-Ion 7.2v 1320mAh.
For an upcoming trip I want to use several 16Gb cards but need to extend the power supply life, and rather than buying half-a-dozen very expensive Panny batteries, I've been trying to find a way to maybe use a longer life (> 3000mAh) Li-Po 7.4v battery (as used in RC toys like aircraft) as an external source by modding the AC power adaptor that fits in the camera with an in-line connector so that I could swap it between the AC charger and the external battery pack (the Li-Po batteries are about 100mm x 40mm x 15mm or so).
Anyone ever done anything similar... good or bad experiences... see an fatal flaws in the logic (apart from the potential for exploding batteries if incorrectly charged, etc etc)..
Any help or advice gratefully received...
Jonathan Grant August 21st, 2008, 12:56 AM I have a 95 minute movie in an AVI file that's only 20.6 gb. It's 24pA and I need to convert it to true 24p.
I put it into after effects and took the pulldown out and am rendering it out to 23.98. But, it's creating a file that's WAY larger than the original. It says I don't have enough space and I have 43 gb free!!!
Why is it so much larger? How much larger is it going to be? Is there any way to keep it closer to the original?
Oliver Darden August 23rd, 2008, 01:51 AM Does anyone know how many other film festivals you can screen at (NOT Premier) at before SXSW. I see that some festivals say 2 or 3 and some say none but I don't see anything on SXSW's website outlining this.
My problem is there are a ton of festivals out there but only a handful that one would want to premier at and it kind of difficulty to know everyones rules. Its like you have to be careful where you screen or some don't want to touch it.
Any advice on this? I never realized out picky and touchy this whole process is. I thought "hey I can show wherever I want", but if I want any kind of distribution etc I should probably be mindful of the rules of the "top 10" fests.
Derek Weiss August 24th, 2008, 08:09 AM Here's a gimbal I made for my remote helicam. This demonstrates stabilization on the roll axis. It also has the same on the tilt/pan axis. I also have a 12" gimbal that will hold a Sony EX1 or equivalent.
I'm making a couple more of these to ride on cablecams and "body cams".

Toby Leddy August 26th, 2008, 09:05 AM Has anyone ever seen or heard of a see through camera housing that could be used to get an interesting view of crowds at concerts? If you've ever seen Wayne Coyne from the flaming lips in his see through ball walking above the crowd; that is the shot we're trying to accomplish for a concert. Like putting a camera inside a clear beach ball. Anyone seen anything or have any ideas?
Thanks-

Stelios Christofides August 26th, 2008, 10:11 AM Hi
Does anyone know if you can rotate the imported image into the DVD template cover case?
If you can't do it do you recommend any other software to produce DVD covers that are able to rotate the imported image at any angle you want?

Andrew Dryden August 29th, 2008, 06:19 PM Hey all-
I just found out from my wife that she wants me to video a friends wedding in Walla Walla on Sunday night...problem is I didn't bring my kit with me and I am already here (I'm from Portland). Does anyone know where I can rent or borrow a decent stick for a Canon XHA1?? Any help would be really really appreciated. You can email me direct at andrew.dryden "at" gmail.com. Thanks again!!
Andy
P.S. I posted this in the helping hands category as well, but was hoping someone here not looking for work might be able to lead me in the right direction. Thanks!!
Hannah Bennett September 3rd, 2008, 07:58 AM Hi,
I'm sure someone out there can help me but I'm not sure I'll explain myself very clearly!
I've been given some footage to edit in Premiere Pro which is of a computer screen (in a variety of compositions e.g. MCU ECU etc). As it is a demonstration of how to use a website, there is a lot of movement in the form of pans and zooms as it tracks the mouse.
To avoid flicker the camera operator filmed this at 25p, however, when I take this in to Premiere Pro and play it out on a monitor, the footage is slightly jerky, making it hard to watch (especially as a lot of it is of a white form being filled in).
Does anyone know of a way that I can double up the fps so that it matches the rest of the footage filmed at 50p? Also, will that actually reduce the jerkiness and if not is there something else I could do?
Any feedback would be so appreciated.
Thank you.
Charles Stewart September 4th, 2008, 03:23 PM I'm located in Wilmington, NC and am trying to find a good rental house some where close by or that ships. Does anyone know of a good rental house? I'm trying to rent 3 Firestore FS-100 for about 3-4 days at the beginning of October. If anyone could point me in the right direction that would be awesome. Thanks!

David Morgan September 19th, 2008, 01:35 PM Anyone know what the difference is between these 2 green screens?
Tim Pearce September 20th, 2008, 08:43 AM Hi,
I made another post about me filming a 50km trail ultra marathon (on the Canon GL2 forum) and I was considering using either of the cameras that I own: GL2 or a smaller sony DCR-HC32 that I use mainly for capturing footage.
I've been doing some research on this site and I was wondering if anyone knew of a place in Toronto (downtown prefereably) where I could rent a lipstick cam? I'm not sure if this will be a solution to my project requirements - but they're pretty expensive so I'd like to rent first. Thanks.

John Reed October 14th, 2008, 01:34 AM I'm researching setting up a not-for-broadcast 1 man kit for capturing live music recordings with multiple cameras (aimed at youtube and myspace etc - I'm not overly concerned with broadcast engineering technical specs), in conjunction with a local community music venue. I'm looking at the feasibility of using 720x576 500 line cameras designed for security purposes with PTZ control, converting output to firewire (probably from composite) and using Wirecast software on a Macbook Pro for vision switching to QT. I was wondering if anyone has tackled this, and if so what equipment you used and what problems you encountered? Also are there any better software or better resolution camera solutions? Also are there any off-the-shelf solutions to the 'low budget OB van without the van' concept available or emerging? It probably crosses over into VJ territory.
Thanks in advance John Reed
Rick Bolton October 15th, 2008, 08:47 PM As a newbie to video / HD video - I would like to know what the really fatal technical errors are - things that can not be easily corrected in post processing.
I am guessing:
Focus
Poor primary audio
Improper depth of field
Colin McDonald October 21st, 2008, 03:12 PM Not exactly up to Steadicam standards and not quite up to Red resolution, but interesting none the less. With further training and an enhanced pixel count (and colour) could this be the solution for weddings and concerts you don't really want to do yourself?

John Whiteway October 23rd, 2008, 02:23 PM Five years ago I corresponded with LaCie and they told me to reformat their drives at HFS+ 64kb for use with Final Cut Pro. I noted, as well, that when reformatting, using the utility CD Silverlining Pro that Lacie used to include with their external hard drives, that when you chose HFS+ 64kb the message came: "Faster manipulation of larger files or streaming video".
What I notice now with the new LaCies I'm buying is that they no longer include the CD but have on the drive something called Silverkeeper. No more Silverlining Pro. And this new utility no longer gives you an option to reformat at 64KB. What I've been able to do is keep using my Silverlining Pro to reformat at 64KB.
Does anybody know why LaCie no longer gives a formating utility with this option? I am assuming that their earlier advice about the value of 64kb still holds. Certainly I have no problem using these drives with Final Cut Pro after I've reformatted them. Or have things changed with these drives and FCP such that there is no longer any advantage to reformating at HFS+ 64kb?
Any thoughts out there?
Thanks.

Alberto Saiz October 24th, 2008, 01:43 AM Hi everyone! I need to buy a lens hood for a Fujinon S16x7.3BRM-68 Lens (this lens comes with the SONY DVCAM 390PK2) Could you tell me what model of the Cavision lens hood fits with this lens? I think it could be the LH100P / LH100M Cavision Lens Hood for Standard Lens (http://www.cavision.com/lenshoods/LH100.htm)
maybe with a 85mm adapter ring, but I have to be sure because a friend is going to BHphoto in NY and as he doesnt know anything about cams and lenses, I have to give him the right model.
Do you know another (cheap) solution?
Thank you very much in advance

BJ Elliott October 30th, 2008, 09:25 AM I have an older JVC GR-DVL9800 camcorder. It started having trouble about 4 years ago, where it would look and sound like the actual shutter mechanism was clicking away and causing my video to look like an old time movie with the lights blinking on and off. It gets worse when the subject is brightly lit, and better in darker locations.
I eventually bought an HD camcorder, and put the JVC away. But I found it recently and was curious if anyone ever figured out what this problem was and if can be fixed. I'd like to use this camera as an SD backup because it shoots in Progressive Scan.
Thanks.
