Can I record the EX-1's output directly to the PDW U-1 deck in real time?

In essence, I'd like to shoot directly to XDCAM disks for conference shoots, treating the disks as virtual DVCAM 184 tapes rather than the need for 4-5 SxS cards, a laptop and two hard disks (plus late night dubbing sessions).

The PDW-U1 won't have write back capability at first. However, when it does, it won't be a recording device per se. It is a file transfer device that will require files be written to it in proper MXF format.

What you are looking to do requires the F75 deck, which will set you back by several more pounds.

Thanks Greg.

Oh well, back to the drawing board. Or tape, in this case. Though I guess the U-1 would be a way of dubbing SxS footage to disk for medium term backup?

More like copying footage to disk. And not medium term, more like long term backup. The XDCAM discs have undergone accelerated environmental testing and have an estimated shelf life of 50 years.
