Can anybody enlighten me here? Is all that the macro switch is doing to limit the focus range in the macro end when turned off? Can I leave it on all the time if I don't mind turning the focus ring a little extra sometimes or does Macro on affect the image quality at the tele end in any way?

*BUMP*
Really, no one knows? How are you guys using this switch then? Always on? Has anyone seen any disadvantages leaving it on besides slower focusing?

I have found with macro on and the focus ring pulled forward so it's no longer manual I lose the ability to get infinity focus.

Hm...I have not noticed this but I will check again. Does the depth of field indicator tell you this or have you noticed by judiging this with your own eyes?
