I would appreciate some input regarding this matter. I am in need of a field monitor to go with the Sony V1 and was wondering if the new Sony HDV Walkman (gv-hd700e) would do the job. I like the fact that I can play my hdv tapes back also via the hdv walkman and keeps me from using my camera's tape mechanism.
Any thoughts on this?

This can only take a composite input though right? wouldn't that be limiting?

Unless I'm mistaken, it can take firewire input which should be great since it's digital. Will be interested to hear what people think of this unit. Based on the specs alone, it would seem to be comparable to the higher end small LCD monitors at about the same price.... with the tape deck thrown in as a bonus!

i am using this unit for a basketball assignment, and mostly as a monitor. (also record second tape for me)
yes it has firewire in/ out, hdmi out, component out, a/v out.
s-video in, a/v in.
usb in the back
the slow motion option, forward/ back, frame by frame is very useful, needed it for reviewing rev calls, fouls and injuries.
edit:
while using outside below 40 degree (between 35-40) it was acting up
